Where has it all gone? What have we gained from giving away all our great colonies?

I miss being rulers of the world

Some conspiracy theorists say the UK and the Dutch still rule the world. I like this, but it's obviously bull. What do you think? What should we be proud of, as British citizens?

This is how big we got!

We sold it in return for the ability to 'hark back to better times'.

empire always ends. its a good thing the B.E did, it did nothing but keep people enslaved

it ended because of few reasons, world wars brought about revoloutions and calls for independence, other countries becoming in general stronger than Britain

Yes this was the real reason. It was too expensive to fight all the rebellion wars (which were increasingly frequent, and would involve a massive deployment of forces around the world).

Also all empires end, which is why the concept of empire has largely gone out of fashion.

You picked up an awful lot of points, awfully quickly. I sense the force within you, you have the potential to be an awesome troll. Good times.

So what are the Americans doing rather than building an empire? They're obviously trying to take over the world...but how?

Not only financially but politically: as much as people think that it was a matter of bad British people vs enslaved people, most of the criticism and claims for needs for more respect of human rights came from the mainland where such ideas were more prevalent and developed. The idea of having colonies was becoming ever more unpopular.

British people didn't necessarily want colonies.

"It was a conspiracy theory of guilt ridden woolley liberals working in secret alliance with socialists and communists and feminists that incited the natives to rebel against the British...and after all we did for them - railways, parliamentary democracy, rule of law, medals from the King/Emperor...bluddy disgrace if you ask me - a Berluddy disgrace!"

You can't remain at the top forever. I remember the merseyside dominance of all things football during the 1980s - came to an end. The same is true of Man U.

Spain was the great power in Europe during the 1500s, France during the 1600s and 1700s, the UK in the 1800s, the USA and USSR in the 1900s and probably China and India in this century.

The US is being caught up by India and China. Watch as the balance of power moves eastwards.
