Type of student at UcLan

I'm still waiting on a decision from Uclan, hopefully I'll get an offer for journalism, but I'm really not hopeful :frown:

I was just wondering, and this may strike you as a stupid question, but is there a certain "type" which goes to Uclan?

I'm from London, so it means I've got a skewed perspective on where types of people are to be found etc etc, as in, in London, you can find almost any type of scene/niche interest, because there is so much diversity.

Is there really lots of different types of people? Arty people, sporty people, keen scientists etc. Obviously depending on what course people are on it will have a bearing on what their interests are, but still.

I'm sorry for being unclear, if you could reply that'd be great though.

There's not really at all, I've found. It's a very diverse university.

There are a lot of international students who generally keep themselves to themselves, and a fair proportion of sports students since sport is one of the universities strong points. There's also a fairly small group of 'active' students - the kind who get involved in everything and are a bit university-obsessed (of which I am one), but aside from that you get every type of person. I can safely say that there is no single person who could come to UCLan and not find loads of other people like them, and things to suit their interest - probably because it's such a large uni population-wise.

I see.

So my interest in early 60s garage rock produced by Joe Meek is well catered for then...., i joke.

Ok, yeah seems a fair analysis, its just a slight worry, which I guess everyone who goes to university for the first time feels.
I have no problem "getting on" with people, its just making proper friends I'm slightly concerned about

yeah there are a certain type, my sister dropped out of Leeds doing Pharmacy to do it at UCLAN and live at home, huge mistake, wot a Muppet!!

Yeah, that's a concern everyone has when they start, but don't worry.
You'll definitely find people like you, and you'll definitely be able to make friends. Making friendships with real substance might take some time, as things are usually quite shallow until Christmas; so don't expect instant close friendships (though it's possible), but it WILL happen.

there are so many different groups of people in UCLAN, its a very diverse uni and there is a niche for everyone, im a first year Journalism student and i really like the course.
Ive finished at Uclan now but being there for 3 years i can definitely say there is something for everyone and it most certainly is diverse!!! You will love it!
You'll probably find its full of people who don't take themselves to seriously and like to drink.

Anyone who says they are clever and studying here is a liar.

I'd like to think I was reasonably "clever" yes.
Just because I'm judged on A Level exams alone doesn't mean I'm stupid. I understand that exams are the only yardstick, but to be honest, I think that if you measure "clever" by school grade success, then you're a bit of a fool.
I know people who've got into the top 5 universities simply by revising their arses off. Does this make them clever? In my opinion, no, because they've learned a subject just as a series of points to regurgitate in exam conditions. I didnt get the best grades in my year but I'm certainly a lot more well read, cultured and articulate than others who surpassed me in terms of exam success.

This is completely right. If I were you I'd definitely ignore the person above, and don't worry about that. Even if grades WERE a measure of intelligence (which they're not, in ANY way), there are plenty of people with AAA here. As it is, grades are, as you've said, just a memory test, and the calibre of students at UCLan is as good as any other university (aside from the RARE few like DontBuyTheSun).
I would argree, do not listen to that person above who obviously is a bit sad and has to time to come onto a thread which has nothing to do with him and he has no knowledge of the subject we are disscussing.

On my course at Uclan were students who achieved AAA at A-level much like myself and were went to private schools etc etc, not that exam results are neccessarily a measure of intelligence but for the point of argument.
Exam standards are the same for all universities and if we are all 'un-intelligent' how did we achieve a 1st at degree level? anyways enough of that, uclan is a great place to be and a respected university.

I know people here who got A's a A level.

People really shouldn't take any notice of those who put the uni down purely because of what they hear about the place. Just take notice of those who are actually at the uni and know first hand.

I go to UCLAN you fool, and have been here longer than you.

Its not a bad thing, but this Uni certainly isnt full of clever people.

I'm not trying to be scathing; but pointing out that you do give the impression that you're not necessarily at university for the best reasons, and that you clearly don't think too highly of yourself. I was simply saying that those attributes are rare, not the norm.

I'm at university to gain a degree, just like everyone else is. It'd be niave to spend thousands if i was just going to come to University for the life experience. And my opinion of myself is fine, and i'm sure there are some very clever people at this university. The question was, type of student you find at UCLan. And on the whole, its the person i described.

I've met barely any people like you.

hey, i know this is a really old thread and all but i might be going to Uclan this September to do journalism. Seeing as you're doing the course I was wondering if you could give me a little insight into the course. How good is it really? Are the employment prospects as good as the university claims them to be? Sorry to bombard you with questions but could you also tell me what Preston is actually like? I'm not from the UK so all I've come to learn is from what I've read from others and seen on youtube....and they seem to give off the impression that it's not a great place, pretty much a 'chavvy' area.

So anything you could tell me really I'd appreciate it  Thanks
