I think the statement is a bit unclear. reasearch has shown (from objectional sources I admit) that something like 10 million people could be fed with the grain given to stock animals in america. other vegetarians wouldn't start eating that much more just to eat!

I think the person meant that if the crop producers were not paid the market rate for the crops that go to the third world they wouldn't let the crops grow.

why peanut butter and jelly?

Peanut butter and jam seems like such an odd combination! But maybe that's just me...

Fabricated alternatives always seem weird to me - we live on a world that gives us everything we need to live but some people decide to give up parts of it and turn to the labs instead to get all their nutrients.

As for the original poster, I'm sure your parents have your best interests at heart.

And if you do go veggie, don't wear leather shoes either, eh

most of the alternitives are not unnatural. soynuts, for example, are quite unprocessed and much better for you than their other nut counterparts. anouther alternitive for protien is beans (yes you do get quite a bit of gas) which also provide fiber....(the american diet is lacking severely in fiber) sources of plant iron are far better absorbed into your system than iron coming from meat (such as spinach, kale, and mustard greens) and are generally also richer in calcium. BTW animal protien makes your bones release calcium into your bloodstream to neutrilize the acids in meat. since milk "the natural source of calcium" is high in animal based protien, you absorb hardly any of that calcium anyway.

and avoiding leather shoes are quite easy, new balance and asics make excellent running shoes without leather; dress shoes are a bit harder to find but can also come in nice nylons ect.

ahhh, I see. well, that would be a good point, but then they could sell their crops cheaply to the third world, and would have a new market.

and peanut butter and jelly is excellent! have you never had it? it's the classic american sandwich! try it RIGHT AWAY, and make sure you toast the bread! I have peanut butter and jelly everyday for lunch, and many days for breakfast.

I believe in the 70s when painkillers were used that people saw them being used as meal aternatives as portrayed in sci-fi films, now it seems a reality in certain aspects.

Wool?

i've recently been having a near-vegetarian (basically no red meat) diet because i rarely buy much meat (except chicken which i'm totally fed up of) and i eat much more healthily than a lot of my flatmates. things like tofu and soya things can be really good and often work out cheaper than meat. i also eat quite a lot of fish which is amazing.

the best thing to do is convince your parents you will eat healthily

Wool?

getting wool doesn't harm a sheep, they just get it sheared and then run off a bit cooler ready for summer. leather involves killin the cow

Is it possible to attain leather without killing a cow such as a cow who died without being killed by another animal?

I think the leather would be a bit rough then.

High quality leather has to come from younger cows.

Even if you are a minor you should at least be allowed a trial to prove that you can be a vegetarian and still be healthy. Its unfair to expect your parents to cook extra meals but if you are willing to do it yourself I think they should at least give you a trial.

Get a good leaflet on vegetarianism. Petas veggie starter kit has very good information and you can order a copy for free

Some of this is a bit biased but its an interesting read nonetheless.

My sister is 12 and became a vegetarian a few years ago because she wanted to. Its not impossible. It was her decision and she doesn't eat any meat at all now. She's even stopped eating haribo because of the gelatine!

Stand up for what you believe in

Being a vegetarian for the sake of not hurting animals is moronic.
Why its a perfectly valid reason. Animals don't get to run round in the field anymore. Battery hens and even barn hens are kept in disgusting conditions, as are dairy farmed cows - and before you say anything I barely drink milk either you can survive just as healthily on soya and its just as tasty.
1.) It is unatural - Humans are meant to eat meat. - Surely, If we weren't able to make the choice we wouldn't be able to survive eating as vegetarians or vegans. In actual fact we can live very healthily as vegans
2.) It is unhealthy. - absolute bull ****. In actual fact people eating proper vegetarian and vegan diets are usually more healthy.
Vegetarians suffer markedly lower mortality from coronary heart disease compared to non-vegetarians (Key et al (1999). This reduced risk may be related to the lower blood cholesterol levels of vegetarians.

Findings from the Oxford Vegetarian Study, a 12 year study of 6000 vegetarians and 5000 meat-eater found that the incidence of coronary heart disease mortality was 28% lower in vegetarians compared with matched omnivores, after all non dietary factors had been taken into consideration (Thorogood, 1994).

http://www.vegsoc.org/info/health2.html

And don't believe all that rubbish about vegetarians not eating enough protein, most meat eaters eat up to 5 times too much protein.
3.) It's stupid because you then eat plants etc. anyway and even fish, who were killed; these are still living organisms.
True vegetarians don't eat fish or fish products, or any associated meat products.
Lets not get majorly into depth about the plant debate but lets just say that I'm sure that plants don't suffer as much as animals do due to aggressive farming methods.

4.) It's all part of the food chain.
Oh come on thats just a lame argument. We have the capability to make a choice, we can survive and have a very healthy diet without meat, we don't need to eat it so why eat it if we don't want to. I'm not trying to convert anyone to vegetarianism so don't rubbish my choices. Just because you eat meat doesn't mean that everyone has to eat it.

Reply 59

Actually kew, carnivores are only meant to eat meat. A lion, for example is a carnivore. As humans, we are omnivores - ie we eat meat and other things - ie veggies, pulses, fungi etc. Pigs are also omnivores :-). The healthiest diets are a mixture of various meat and veg products.
