how can two specialist Unis that teach a limited number of subjects be compared with unis that teach a wider range of subjects?

why dont warwick bristol, manchester, birmingham or notthingham deserve to be mentioned? Please could you give us some reasons?.

I agree, you're overvaluing sciences, Imperial is a world class uni but is still limited. You have to look at some of the other powerhouses in the same light. Warwick and Notts deserve to be up there, but at the same time, there is also a gap between the top 3 and the rest.

It depends how you define 'best'.
most people view it terms of prestige of the universities as a whole and also how they are viewed globally make effect the matter.

You would never see birmingham on the list even if it is great at 'X' subject.
Because it doesn't have the same status recognised by empolyers.

If you wanted to be completely fair you would have to say top 5for each course, but who can be bothered with that?

I wish I was in the low mod forum right now, becuase the only thing I have to say of any worth involves many swear words.

agreed, however this has got nothing to do with comparing a uni which is a specialist to that with is not, its like comparing apples and pears

I think the graduates of birmingham university might have something to say about that

Btw, you don't need to treat this guys word as Gospel, if you look through this thread, warwick gets mentioned all the time ( not notts, birmingham and bristol as much). The thing is, the whole G5 thing, which includes the supposed 'top three london unis' is outdated I think. There are now many other unis that are very well regarded by employers and if league tables are anything to go by, then warwick is in the top 5. I think that unis such as Bristol and notts are losing their repututations because student performance levels are going down.

The reason why Warwick isnt generally put up there is cos its celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Its been so succesful because of its links to business, and the fact that its one of the few unis to actually make a profit.

Yeah, but you could say comparing how good Oxbridge are(olderwhich has evnetually influenced that they regarded as better by most people) is wrong to be compared to 1960s universities.
