The Official LSE Gathered Field Thread 2009 MK IV

The Official LSE Shortlist/Gathered Field Thread 2009!

Couldn't find one of these threads, so thought I'll make my own. Basically this thread is for people who have received the 'gathered field' email and are still waiting.... If you don't know what the email is:

The School has received a large number of high quality applications for places on the **** course. Given the excellent standard of applicants this year, we will make a final decision on your application once we have assessed and compared all high quality applications received by the UCAS deadline of 15 January 2009 against each other. Since there are many other promising applicants in this group who will be given equal consideration, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to subsequently offer you a place.

Basically I think the shortlist is just a pool of people they have gathered who are good enough for an offer BUT because of the competition, they are forced not to give out an offer straight away. At the end of the deadline they will review how many offers they have given out to other applicants (people who got offers straight away) and depending on numbers, they will give out some or no offers to the people in the shortlist group. So for example if accounting and finance was very competitive last year then all or most of the people on the shortlist would have to be rejected, HOWEVER if the numbers are a little low then maybe some offers can be given out to people on the shortlist. In the unlikely situation of the course being low on numbers then I think everyone on the shortlist would get offers. Please note that LSE and other universities give out more offers than places (for LSE I think its like 3 times the places according to someone who went to an introduction open day last year) as some people may not choose LSE or fail to meet their conditions. Remember this is just my view and may not be right. Hopefully this thread can be used to determine the likelihood of someone receiving an offer/rejection after receiving this email.

If you want to read what LSE make of the email then visit:

Basically please post in the following format:

If your name is on the list and you receive an offer/rejection, then just post the offer details or rejection (feedback if applicable) with the date you received the decision. No need to post all your details again.
