It's unlikely many people will be able to help you. As you aren't allowed a car in Cambridge, perhaps you are less likely to learn to drive here.

edit: try jigglypuff? Vague recollection of her taking her driving test, although I dont know whether it was in Cambridge.

I wouldn't advise learning to drive here, the roads are horrible:p:
But other than that, I've seen a few of the driving instruction company type cars about, so some of them operate here, and I figure their instruction will be a pretty reasonable standard.
Yeah, FadedJade is right, I took mine in Cambridge.

I used: http://www.bennettsintensive.co.uk/index.asp

They have a few driving instructors, and the woman who co-runs the company is really organized. They got me to pass, and I was absolutely awful, so they must be doing something right.

There are loads of learners about in Cambridge, or maybe I just notice them more cause I'm incredibly vulnerable when I'm cycling and they're passing me, and there aren't many places suitable in cambridge due to traffic restricitions etc so they all congregate in a few places.

"Aren't allowed a car in Cambridge"?

I drive around Cambridge all the time, along with the rest of the rush hour traffic

Cambridge isn't just a university you know - I don't think the OP was intending to tear up the lawns at Kings.

There are plenty of good instructors, best way to do it is via a centre. I had someone at BSM who was pretty good, but the car was useless so I wouldn't advise it.

Yes, but nearly all of the people in here at students at Cambridge, rather than people who live here, which severely narrows the number of people available to answer the question. As a student, you aren't allowed a car unless you have special permission from a Proctor, which you would only get if you could already drive.

Yeah, but I'm sort of assuming the OP knows this and is one of the few that live in Cambridge. Anyway, you're right it's just going to be the locals that can help. Hopefully there are a few more out there
There's a BSM driving school on Bridge Street next to the t-shirt shop. I know this because their cars are constantly getting in my way - they're always awkwardly driving in or out of the really narrow entrance. No idea how good it is, of course.

Cowley Road test centre, highest pass rate in the region, easy routes :-) go there! Hardly any bikes as not in the centre, no rounabouts apart from about 3 large ones, 1 hill start, 2 if your being particular.... I like it there :-)

there are bloody hundreds of learners here, and all of them seem to come and do 3 point turns in my street every single bloody morning, and well throughout the day! i think if i drove i would get really pissed off. but as i cycle/walk doesnt bother me that much

The OP is only wanting a driving instructor :p: not a car just yet!
There are plenty of instructors around- I had a guy who lived outside of my village (outside of Cambridge)
If you were to look on the internet i'm sure you could find some reviews about them too.

I'm learning with one of my dads friends who teaches in Cambridge, could sort you his number if you PM me, or if i don't have his number you can have the name of the school. He is very good :-) and he is nice aswell

This is so true, I went to my first 9am yesterday and I have never seen so many bikes in my life. I thought 10am was bad!

I'm not too fond on BSM. I'd rather go with someone independent.

Thanks for advice.

Anybody thinking of learning to drive in Cambridge should avoid the student rush hour http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XA_Crc67SAM

Lol, that's great! And you can see my college from there. Or a spot that's connected to it :ninja:
There are a few good driving instructors in Cambridge I've been with about 3. I would make sure, whomever you choose they have good reviews first or recommendation if you can! My best driving instructor was Ray from www.driveawayschoolofmotoring.com I passed my test with him he did a great prep job with me, only problem is he's doesn't work weekends but he said others from the same driving school do. If you've chosen any instructor and don't like who you've got then don't be afraid to change. You can also check on the government website and choose an instructor in your area www.gov.uk/find-driving-schools-and-lessons.
