Why are ginger people offended when you call them ginger?

Has anyone else noticed this?

Because it is a word used negatively, and they usually laugh as they're saying it which therefore gives it a negative impact which thus offends the 'ginger' person it is being said to.

because they dont like being reminded bout it

1) depends on the tone/context its used.

2) its pointing out a feature of them which is odd in normal discourse, so its likely that its meant with offence when just randomly said.

they of course depend on the relationship between the speaker and listener, though.

its not really the word ginger, its more to do with the fact its often said in a derogatory manner that offends them i guess.

Probably because they've got crap for it their entire lives.
I don't generally get offended by that. It only bugs me when people say it like it is a bad thing or tell me randomly - as if I hadn't noticed for myself lol. As long as it is only said in conversation like you would refer to someone with blonde or brown hair, then it isn't an issue.

Maybe they prefer to be known as red haired. Anyway, why would you be calling them a ginger? If you're like 'ahahaha you're ginger!' then yeah it is offensive because you're laughing at it.

I don't get offended by it at all. It's fine - I've never been teased about my hair colour though, so maybe I don't get any negative connatations from it.
all kinds of people get offended when you accurately describe one of their characteristics in an aggressive kind of way. For example "gay" etc., or racial attributes.
I think its the way the word is said, if its being used to offend someone then it will obviously cause offence.

They get offended because they are, quite properly, ashamed of themselves.

I am assuming that is a joke. If not, why on earth should people be ashamed of their hair colour? The notion is ridiculous.

I don't mind being ginger. What I do mind, is abuse from total strangers on the basis of my hair colour.

Who gives a **** if I'm ginger? It doesn't matter.

You're an idiot.
"ginger" is a strange one, because unlike other things I mentioned above like calling people gay or referencing their ethnicity, "ginger" is a completely stand-alone and foundationless insult (if you can call it that). When one aggressively calls someone a paki or a ******, say, the offense is carried in the implication that the target shares the undesirable characteristics (real or otherwise) associated with those people.

But, what is meant to be wrong with ginger people? AFAIK there's nothing, not even jokingly - unless someone can explain it? So it's just a fairly random thing to pick up on that became self-sustaining.
That ginger people get upset about being called ginger makes as little sense as people calling them ginger in the first place.

That is a silly thing to say, when it isn't the fact you are being called ''ginger'' that people get offended by, it is when it is said in a derogatory way - and most people do get upset/offended if people make a negative comment about them, particularly if it is something that occurs regularly.

I don't know a single red-head that hasn't been teased/bullied in some way, and I don't know many people who haven't, at some point in their lives, made fun of a ''ginger'' person, which is really quite pathetic.

I'm ginger and I don't get offended by it. All my mates call me ginge; me and my best friend are ginger and we take the p*ss out of eachother over it. If some random wants to come up to me and shout "ginger" I just laugh at them and ask them if they can come up with something more original

I would like to assume that you are joking.

If not, what a ridiculous thing to say.

It isn't as if they held a meeting with their genes and said;
"Hey, I've got an idea, why don't you make me have red hair, so that for the rest of my life I will always come across some ignorant, immature numpty who mocks me for my hair colour".
