I was just wondering what happens when you go to your doctor and ask to be put on the pill?
Is there a certain procedure that they go through?
Also i know there are different kinds of pill, what are the differences?
Thanks to anyone who replies!!

there is different types of pill the difference is how strong or weak u have it the one im on also stops any acne i may get which i like to add taht i dont suffer from acne so i hope that helps email bk

i might ask for the 1 that helps acne then.
So all the doctor does is ask if you have a heavy period or not and then gives you a perscription? Do they check anything else?

Reply 3

they ask you lots of questions about your family's health history, like if you have a history of breast cancer/thrombosis etc etc, and about your lifestyle like if you smoke or do drugs.

Reply 4

How long does it normally take?

something else to note - they'll probably take your blood pressure. & i think the standard is to re-check it every 6 months. because as Hazzie sort of referred to, the Pill is said to increase the risk of blood clots.

they might mention the whole STI thing too.

all in all, it shouldn't take more tham 10 minutes i would imagine. but you want to make sure that it's suitable for you to be taking before you start introducing synthetic hormones into your body every day!

they'll ask if you have a family histroy of strokes, blood clots or breast cancer. they'll ask if you suffer from migraines (as the pill can make this worse)

they should take your pulse and blood pressure and weigh you.

they'll ask if you smoke or drink.

they'll ask if you want it for contraception or for other reasons (ie bad acne/period pain)

different GPs have different pill preferences, and the generally start you off on one particular one (often microgynon 30.) you have a follow up appointment 3 months later to check blood pressure and weight. if you have any problems (for example i found it made my skin worse) then they can change the pill for a different type. you need to take it for at least 3 months to see it settle and if it works for you. after you've been on it with no problems for a few months you only have to go every 6 months (instead of 3)

if it's for contraception it's free even if you're not in full time education.

Dianette-the one that is used to treat acne isn't meant to be prescribed as a contraception anymore and is an acne treament so you'll have to pay the prescription charge for it.
If you ask to be treated for acne they'll give you dianette, chances are if you ask for a contraception they will give you microgynon.

up until 3 months ago i was on dianette and i got it free, but it could have changed since. because i was on oxytetracycline (an antibiotic) for my skin but then wanted contraception, so they put me on dianette instead and it came under contraception.

Its is a recent thing ie 2 months ago! I was feeling a bit put out but 6 months worth for £7 isnt bad.

Also, they monitor your weight as well as check your blood pressure, because if you weigh over 12 stone, the pill is less effective and the pill is associated with weight gain. They tend to ask for the date of your most recent period, so it's a good idea to keep a record of this.

I take Norimin. Dunno what the diff is between that and the others though.
Slightly off subject but does anyone know if you still have your period if you are pregnant but on the pill? Just cos it is due to the pill that you get a regular period every month so I thought even if you were pregnant you would have a period as it is a set time each month you have one. Anyone know the facts about this?

Its easier I find to go to your local family planning clinic, for some reason less uncomfortable. But b warned u have 2 b careful my nurse had been giving a complelty different pill 2 the one she wrote down I shud be having which is a bit worrying. The first lot I was on was a horrible experience but now I'm on a new one all is fine and dandy!!

If you are pregnant and on the pill you won't get a period. Something to do with the progesterone released during pregnancy that stops them.

Or right my friend said that when you are on the pill you still get your period when you are pregnant due to the pill causing false periods (so to put it).
I'm just worrying myself, I had cold all week and felt sick on a morning and thinking oh my god I might be pregnant! Now I'm convinced my stomach is big (even though no one else thinks it) but I have been having my periods as normal.

my doctor checked my bp and checked family history that was about it though.....as i was underage we had to go through the questions as to did my parents know would they mind etc, i was already an adult in thier eyes she was just a really good a though doctor.

what was really good though is my bf took me to a couple of doctors appointments before so she was aware he wasnt a fling and that we were in a serious relationship.

the periods while pregnant thing... if you are worried go to the doctors, there have been cases of women on the pill getting pregnant and still having normal periods... i've no idea how common this is though

depends on why you want it and your age. i got it when i was 14 due to period problems.u take aload of test ie blood tests, utltrasound, etc. then they put you on stronger pain relief stuff. if that doest work you go on the pill.if you are young they might put you on the POP 'mini pill'

if its for contraception, they can put you on it as soon as u ask, and its free. but u gotta go back every 6 months for blood pressure check. u might have to try a few to find the right one. the first one i went on made me really really sick but the next one was ok
