Attention and fame for his Church and himself? A feeling of power, even if fleeting?
Yeah as if the Church hasn't had its name dragged through the mud enough. To be honest I find it all quite ironic, the fact that the people repsonsible for 9/11 gave Islam a bad name and this pastor is givign Christianity a bad name too. Whatever he gets up to is his business but to make it a public affair

hehe at least I now know exactly what I'm doing my dissertation on, having had a massive passionate debate rant in a GD thread over this. :o:

I think it exemplifies a lot of modern thinking but it's wrong. It's consumerist, individualist, privatised Christianity - it's all about my need for spirituality, the bits of Jesus' teaching I want to follow, and what I do in the privacy of my own home.

But God hasn't saved me, but rather has called a people to himself - the Church. At least, that's what I think the apostle meant when he wrote:
you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.
Once you were not a people,
but now you are God’s people;
once you had not received mercy,
but now you have received mercy
The writer of the Guardian article seems to view Church as some kind of lecture theatre, where we go to hear the erudite and educated give sermons. It may be that (it might not be - should you stop going if you're a better, smarter public speaker than the vicar?), but it is not primarily that at all. It's more about a worshipping community, and you can't get that at home or on your own or by shopping around for the best deal.

Some of the people on there make me regret democracy...

But more pressingly, why would Claire Rayner insist on speaking in 3rd person?

Just the general ignorance :p: not of all of them!

And Claire Rayner is the person on the link after Dawkins, the one who would apparently greet the Pope with a biliary 3rd person biography

Well, the fact they associate humanism with Godlessness decrees their lack of intellectual capacity before you even read the article, even then you simply skim through the people who have commented (not even reading the comments) and all I see is:
- Militant wannabe theologian, even though he declares theology isn't a subject.
- Broadcaster and "campaigner", why does anyone need to be described as a campaigner?
- Journalist
- Journalist (there are a few of these, I wonder why)
- Professor
- Professor (the professors are by far and foremost the most reasoned responses out of the so-called advocates of reason)
- Human rights campaigner, at least the campaign of this one is specified
- Child sexual abuse sufferer at a Catholic school, because y'know, child abuse only ever happens under Catholics (this one is even underlined for "emphasis")
- Author (another intellectual response)
- Comedian (and writer)
- Comedian (really, now, are these the most intellectual people you can find, to put alongside professors etc.?) this one even has the wonderful link "[To see which wacky Pope you most resemble try our quiz: Which Pope Am I?]" below their statement!
- Journalist and author (another)
- Bad Science columnist, I was unaware the Pope was coming here to represent science
- Comedian
- Writer
- Comedian, ok this is getting ridiculous now...
- Writer...
- Comedian, this isn't funny anymore
- Cartoonist, because we always need to end with one of these, sums it up :wink2:
