I take Politics and find that it is a very interesting subject, despite some typical comments of it being boring etc. but I just would not study it at uni as I need something a bit more mathematical (Economics). I think the best thing about Politics ALevel is the fact that it does not have coursework in the syllabus!!! Out of interest is anybody here taking the American Comparitive module for A2?

What exam board are you with? I'm with OCR and we have done coursework for A2 level. I'm doing the US Government option which I actually do find a tad boring with the Synoptic/comparative module.

I think Politics can get slightly more mathematical, for instance I will get a BSc at LSE, but it is obviously not as mathematical as Econ.

I did a module on voting systems which was quite mathsy!!

Is that at A level or degree level?

My exam board is Edexcel, and the lack of coursework means I can take 5 ALevels!!
I agree that the US comparitive modue is boring, but the boring modules are the ones people sometimes do well in fior some strange reason.
The voting systems module was not mathsy!! Lol. It just looks like it is because it contains numbers, but there was no need to manipulate them!!!

To be perfectly honest, i think Government and Politics should be introduced from Y7 as i think it's very important in this day and age.

I completely agree. A survey revealing that 75% of secondary school children thought Winston Churchill was an insurance salesman (!) says a lot about our generation as far as politics is concerned. The same survey showed that most children didn't recognise a picture of Charles Kennedy, a few more recognised Michael Howard and about half recognised Tony Blair. I think politics is way more important than religion and they force us to study that until we're 16!

Just A-Level Edexcel! About 7 different types of voting systems, describing how they work (with mathematical models). Not too keen on maths, it scares me

oh right. I did voting systems also but I wouldn't have described it as mathematical, but then I don't mind maths that much. Doesn't mean I'm any good at it though!

The comparative module actually looks like it could be interseting as your required to analyse instead of just rolling of a list of facts like some of questions at AS.

i was thinking of doing AQA hehe

I'm doing OCR govt&pol as well, which is interesting because practically everyone else I've come across is doing edexcel! What did you do for your coursework? I chose to write about how the relationship between Gordon Brown and Tony Blair has affected the Labour government.

Anyway, in my opinon govt&pol is not a mickey mouse subject in the slightest and certainly not thought of as poorly as subjects such as media studies. However, I study both of the aforementioned subjects and neither have hindered my application; I even got an offer from Edinburgh.

During my opendays at the universities I have applied for, the current undergraduates tended to poke fun at all the students taking Geography and Politics. If they saw someone having a pint during their lunch hour, they would start laughing and ask them if they are studying geography.
I didnt really think politics was an easy course, until now.

It is quite easy from my experiences, but it's very interesting and I have learnt quite a lot.

Mine is about the relationship between cabinet and Blair.

I'm doing the OCR gov&pol too. I think it's a really interesting subject to do, but have found that the questions, particularly on the synoptic module are reasonably easy to predict. This does make revision focus easier, but the analytical points and knowledge is not mickey mouse at all!

My coursework is on constitutional change- do we need a supreme court? Haven't finished it yet, but I have enjoyed the research and analysis of sources etc.! AAhh, deadline in 2 weeks!!!!

Meh, they were probably just scientists who were bitter because of all their 9-5s.

Although, most arts/social science subjects have timetables similar to ours, politics and geography are no easier than any of them...

hehe- dont suppose you could all post up your relevant Textbooks titles/authors or ISBN's could you?

Thanks

 have you done A2 yet? Yes, i would agree that AS politics is pretty straight forward (apart from electoral systems - don't get me started) But A2, you can't just flick through your notes and that's it - you really have to knw your stuff
Which exam board are you with? I'm with AQA

Got an offer for BSc Government at LSE. Cannot wait! Where are you going?

Either Southampton or Leeds - not sure which one though. Although i really wanted to go to Edinburgh! :frown: I've emailed tham asking why my application was unsuccessful, so hopefully i will know why they rejected me.

I agree completely. I'm taking A2 Government and Politics with AQA as well, and it is definitely much more difficult this year than last year. Not helped by the fact that our teacher is useless twit. Did you take the Comparative US/UK Module? I took the exam in January and I really did want to die when I turned over the paper. Not looking forward to those results AT ALL.
