Well have a look at your freeking city centre rules or are we supposed to do as your username suggests?

You can drive in bus/taxi lanes at certain times as far as I know. Look for a sign telling you.

Round by me if you do that you could be looking at a £60/£80 fine...

yeah, my instructor told me that if i didnt use the bus lane at the times when your allowed id get failed!
Check the times of operation... round here I can drive when they are not being used i.e

Mon-Sat 7.30am-9.30am
I am not out during those times usually so I drive in bus and taxi zones

In the city center, if you drive in a taxi and bus zone by accident what happens? thanks.

What should happen is this:

If challenge you say "it was an accident" and nothing happens.

What is increasingly likely to happen is this:

A camera automatically sends the registered keeper of the vehicle a fine.

So it should be perfectly ok to drive about oblivious to your surroundings? There are normally big signs and the words bus lane painted in the floor in ****-off huge letters at a minimum. If you can't notice that then you shouldn't be driving

Do you get points deducted?

Getting points deducted would be great. Everyone would be driving in bus and taxi lanes..... (no, you don't get points on your licence for driving in a bus and taxi lane)

Look at the signs at the beginning of bus lanes. If they have a time eg 7.30 - 10.30 - those are the times the bus lane in operation and in use. You can't use the bus lane between the those times, however out those times, you are allowed to use the bus lane. If the sign has no times, then the bus lane is constant use and can't be used any time of the day.

The consequences depend on many factors. My friend has used a bus lane on numerous occasions and hasn't been fined. So I guess those ones don't have cameras.

If you do that, you show them the middle finger

This one just had really poor signs up and i had just seen it when i was at the traffic lights near the entrance of that bus/taxi zone (it was more like a zone rather than a bus lane).

Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realise that you've never ever made any mistakes while driving, such as going in the wrong lane on a roundabout, or taking the wrong turning. God, I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say I'm jealous.

I hope your sarcasm detector's not broken.

Well said.

I accidentally did this once when I was lost, but there are usually bollards up to close it and clearly they weren't at the time, so I guess it was a free zone when I was there (sunday evening iirc). Anyway, I didn't get fined, but I thought I might have been.
I'm not saying I'd never do it, but if caught wouldn't expect to get away with it- I don't think the excuse of 'I wasn't looking where I was going' would (or should) be a valid defence.

I wasn't having a go at the OP who did drive in one, but at the person who seems to think the police should just let everyone off because "it was an accident"

You don't think police should be allowed to use discretion for genuine mistakes? That would be a sad day indeed.

If you turn the wrong way by mistake and end up in a buses-only route that is not exactly the same as "not looking where I was going" now is it?

What I'm disagreeing with is that you should instantly get off. If it's badly signposted it'll never stand up in court so you'll get off anyway. To me it sounded like a 'what if I keep doing it until I get caught' like speeders and people with little plates/noisy exhausts. It is now looking more like an 'oh ****- it happened, what if I get caught'. I was disagreeing with trying to get off in the first case.

There are certain things you simply shouldn't get wrong. You wouldn't get out of a speeding ticket for accidentally missing the massive speed change signs.

I admit I'm not an expert on the entire country, but certainly around London bus/taxi lanes are clearly labelled over and over again, and in the centre are painted bright red all over. You can't miss them; its not like going in the wrong lane at a roundabout or taking the wrong turning. I have no sympathy for anyone who gets caught driving in them by "accident".

I do agree that if its not clearly labelled or if you take a wrong turning and end up being forced into one, thats a genuine accident you shouldn't get prosecuted for. But I don't think I've ever seen a bus/taxi lane that fits either of these discriptions.
