Don't mean to thread hijack, but I'm also an international graduate student - can anyone tell me anything helpful about The Rectory? Location? Bathrooms? Social aspects? I would really appreciate it!

SS and GDS are overrated! Everyone I know who lives there wishes they'd thought it through a bit better! The rooms are absolutely tiny and they're not very sociable (plus ridiculously expensive)

Can't say I've met anyone who thinks that about GDSA and SSA... especially SSA because the location is amazing. The rooms are small but i still love mine; especially the ensuite. Plus it's hardly unusual for London.

Reply 45

for strand campus is SS a good bet? i put that down as my first choice! and GD as second!

Reply 46

SS is physically closest to Strand :smile:

Reply 47

so what are the pros and cons for SSA?

Has anyone tried to access the online accommodation program yet? I was given a username and password along with my official offer letter, but it's saying invalid user/pass. Perhaps the system hasn't been opened for usage this year yet?

Anyone have any sucess on this front?

yeah i had that problem too in december. just give it a couple of weeks for the system to register it, and make sure you have accepted kings as your FIRM choice on UCAS. maybe ring them or complete a paper copy for your accomodation. hope this helps.

I kind of liked the idea that the Rectory seems quiet and in a good location. I think I put it second or third. I may see you around there, my fellow Yank!

Yeah, I had a few problems, too. I have officially sent in my app, so rest assured eventually it works. I had to email the humanities office to have them confirm my acceptance of their offer, then again when they had me listed as female :tongue:. I've also noticed that they recently updated the accommodation website, and the links to the online application for graduate and internation students is broken (they forgot the "s" after http), so just access it via the undergraduate tab on the left.

Though I've run into a few technical problems, the staff at Kings have been really helpful in fixing everything, so hopefully that's a good sign.

I put it as my second choice - it does seem like a great option, doesn't it? And, yes - maybe I'll see you there! :yep:

so what are the pros and cons for SSA?

Pros:
* if you're at the Waterloo campus (1st year law students, pharm, nutrition, business) you are 10 seconds away from uni
* decent kitchen
* en suite
* great transport links (Jubilee, Bakerloo, Northern and Waterloo & City)
* 10 minutes from Strand campus
* 15 minutes from Guy's campus

Cons
* not the most sociable of halls - you need a swipe card and key to get into the apartments, so its not as easy to socialise
* no common room
* no bar
* security = evil
* rooms are quite small (though there are a few lucky sods that got big rooms)

Hope that helps

no!! they're just a bit strict and grumpy sometimes, it's the same here at GDS. I can't say I really find it bothers anyone too much though, most of the time they're only doing what the rules tell them just in a rather grumpy/shouty way! It's a source of amusement more than anything. They are mildly irritating sometimes but having 24 hour security like that makes the halls feel very safe.

music is at the strand, yes.

Well it's not really a ballot but there's not guarantee you'll get one of your top three choices although people seem to more than don't. Also those who live outside the m25 get priority during allocations. Basically you're likely to get one of your top choices but it isn't certain, which is the same as everywhere really so don't worry.
