Hey everyone,

I'm a grad student and am having a hard time ranking these choices. I'd rather be with other grads than a lot of undergrads, and location is one of my top criteria. I'm going to be studying film at Strand and these are my top 4 choices (I don't mind walking a bit to get to campus, but don't want to have a long commute)

The Rectory
SSA
Lillian Penson (does anyone know where this is located in the city?)
Wolfson

What are the top choices for other grads out there?

Also, as I'm an international student, does anyone know if we can move in a couple days before orientation/enrollment week?

I think the intercollegiate halls are ideal. You may be further away from campus, but you're closer to the Maughan and Senate House libraries and you're right in the centre of London with easy access to clubs/bars. If you think about it you'll actually be spending minimal time in lectures and on campus so I don't know why distance is such a priority. I think if you're at the Strand then the intercollegiates are the best and for Guy's campus maybe Wolfson and SSA/GDS. Walking backwards and forwards across Waterloo Bridge every day will become tiresome! I much prefer the Bloomsbury area than Waterloo. Plus, the rooms are bigger, cheaper and you get food. My course is actually based at Waterloo, but I'm still choosing the intercollegiates over SSA. If I didn't I can see myself just going to my lectures across the road and then heading back to my room and not making the most of the awesome central London location.

couldn't have put it better i totally agree  out of interest how have you ranked the intercolls?? i keep changing my mind even though there doesnt seem to be a huge difference between them...

Lillian Penson Hall is about an hour's walk from the Strand campus, right beside the Hyde Park. it's quite far off from the other intercolls.

the letting weeks for King's halls should have been tailored to the King's orientation/registration week since it's longer than the intercoll's. but for the intercolls it's one day before the start of term, so you have to ask whichever intercolls you have been allocated to whether you can move in earlier. cause some intercolls arent open at all till mid sept.

and of course you have to pay more as well.

No, the University only provides a wired internet connection. In my flat I have my own wireless router connected to the network and it works across quite a wide part of the hall. But you have to be careful about security so other people don't steal your 7GB bandwidth!

A.

issit ethernet?

Is the bandwidth enough to stream HD movies without buffering?

To seniors that had lived at SSA before, how did you guys survive without internet access in the room??? Go the the library everytime you need to online? this is so troublesome!!!!

hey got an offer for medicine (guy's campus) and was trying to choose accommodation. I don't want apartments, but king's college hall and hampstead look to far away from the city, and wolfson doesn't have internet from what i've heard (might of course be wrong). I was looking at intercollegiate halls (connaught and college mainly), but I'm not sure about a couple of things:
- mixing with UCL students, who are said to be posh people, plus the competition thing between UCL and KCL ;]
- which intercollegiate hall in general do the most kcl med students go to?

The students told me that Hampstead is ~45 mins away from Guy's campus on the tube, so it isn't that far and Wolfson does have the internet btw. There will be 'posh' people from every univeristy and the inter-London medical school rivalry is just banter really, it's part of the fun.

I have no idea to be honest! I'm sure there will be a few King's medical students there though, because not everyone will want to live in the KCL halls.

Lots of love for Connaught Hall.

I really hope I can get a place there (or at least at one of the three Garden Halls).

When I list my preferences for accommodation and click onto another subheading then all my choices disappear and I have to start again! Has anyone else has this problem?

I would recommend you medics seriously considering Wolfson House or Great Dover Street. You have the advantage of being in throwing distance of Guy's campus (trust me getting in for those 9am lectures will get harder and harder, so location is key!). There will also be plenty of people on your course around (most medics will stay at either of these), and being close to the campus is nice, as you'll be spending the next 5/6 years here with those people - so it's good to be a part of that community, and show your disdain for those at the Strand (Strandy's we call them:p: ).

You'll find there'll be enough Strandy's around these halls too so you can escape the medics if you must!

Intercollegiates - a few close friends go to them, and generally find aren't quite so involved with medic things, and that flatmates will be gone at different times due to being on different courses and at totally different unis. Plus, who wants to live with the godless scum of Gower Street? (UCL btw :p:)

PM me if you want to know more.

It's really hard to choose any accomodation without pictures -.-

I'm starting Biomedical Sciences at King's in September, and I'm thinking of putting Wolfson as my first choice.
I'm visiting the uni/campus/accommodation end of April so don't want to make any final decisions before that.

Do you know whether there are many medics at SSA and how far away it is from Guy's campus? Thank you! :suith:

How do you know when your application for accommodation has been sent? There's no send button :s-smilie: I'm so confused!

Reply 797

Hi! I know there's been a lot said about accomodation, but I'm still so confused. I'm international, so it's very hard to find out which are the best choices just from the brochures! I'm law, so I'll be based at Strand from what I hear, which means that SSA would be closest, but some people have said some bad things about it. So what I'd like to know is how far is the distance from Strand to the Intercollegiate halls? Is there a disadvantage to the IH in terms of social life? Are they en suite (because in the brochure it doesn't seem to say anything about it), and if they aren't, how bad is the sharing-a-bathroom-thing?

And also, what residence would be best if one is looking for as much green as possible? I'm from a tiny place in the country, and I really want a place where I can go running in green surroundings without having to take the train or something to get there. Is that even possible in London?

Is it true what they say about SSA and GDSA, that the rooms are so tiny and the social life not that great? If it is, are the rooms significantly large somewhere else, and then, where?

I know these are a lot of questions, but I'm very anxious to have a homey atmosphere where I live, so lastly, is there anywhere where you would say that the atmosphere is the most relaxed/ most friendliest? I'm a very stay-at-home sort of person, and I'd like something that's both quiet and social. Any particular suggestions?

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

First year Law students are based mainly at the Waterloo campus, not the Strand campus. :p:

I personally haven't met any from there, as it's close to the Strand and Waterloo campus. However it is a nice area - it's two stops on the tube from Guy's, a 15 minute bus journey or a half an hour walk.
