Is there a internet connection available in your room at all the halls?

Hi everyone, thanks for all the informations!
King's will be my firm so I am looking for accomodations.. I really like Hampstead residence, but could being so far from king's be a problem for college social life and co.? For me it is not a problem to travel every morning to and from strand campus.
I also really like intercollegiate halls position, but here there is the same question, is there the possibility that I will feel left out from college life?
(i really don't want to live in south london :-p )

Is the social scene of your particular accommodation really that important? Surely there's a social scene to uni beyond halls?

Wolfston seems cool. It's not much more than Hampstead and much closer to, well, everything.

Reply 83

It is not that important of course, I only want to know more about it. I think i'll put Hampstead and commonwealth as my first choice and then Wolfon..

Reply 84

Argh, I have no idea how I'm going to choose my accommodation. :-/ I think I'll probably opt for SS.

HI,

I havn't had time to read all the posts on this thread so im sorry if something similar has been asked.
Basically I have applied to study computer science so will be studying at the strand campus. Which accomodation is the best for social life and which is fairly close to the strand campus. I presumed that Stamford street would be the best as it is pretty big and located fairly central, but from some of the comments about it it seems like thre social life isn't as good as other places. Also I am not keen on the Hampstead ones as they are a bit too far out.
So which one is the best for social life??

KCH is about 30mins on the bus. Catered and very social, lots of parties - last Saturday it was Heros and Villains . Wolfston House seems to be quite social too but don't know much about it.

Seriously everyone, just click on the link below to find the residence locations, then go to Google Maps and find the distances from A to B!

The map at the back of the King's housing guide is best for that. =)

People living in SS or the other slightly more expensive halls, are you able to live on just loans/grants etc. or did you need to save up before starting uni?

I know I want to go in to inter-collegiate halls as I wanna be in the most social halls. I really don't know which ones are the best to pick though. I like the look of international halls, but are they just for international halls mainly?

International hall :yep:

Don't be fooled by the name, its not JUST for internationals  , it's probably about 50/50.

And yea IH is great for social: like 750ish residents, corridors  , catered, cinema, bar :eek3: , squash court, costa coffee. :woo:

I think in the year I applied everyone wanted GDSA or SSA initially, but obviously not everyone could have them so lots of people were disappointed. So beware you are not guranteed AT ALL to get your first few choices, I know people with KCA/Hampstead as their 12th choice who still got one of them!

All the Halls have advantages and disadvantages, and I think the best one also varies by which campus you're at. I ended up in intercollegiates, which initially I really didn't want but now I'm glad I was there. Paying for catered was a complete waste of money for me, but most people made the most of it (even if they moan about the food it's not that bad, I'm just very picky!)

If I were to apply for accomodation again, I'd put Wolfson House first purely for the convenience to my campus (Guys). If I was based at the Strand/Waterloo, one of the Garden Hall Intercollegiates would be my first choice.

Eh, Wolfston is cheaper but there's no en-suite and it's a bit further out. Do you know the street name for Wolfston House? According to Google Maps it's a 17 minute walk from Stamford Street to the Strand Campus.

From SS to waterloo its like a 5 second walk xd, convenient if u oversleep or leave somethin at home :P
the price isnt appealing :frown: lol

Reply 96

It is never a 17 min walk from SS/Waterloo campus to Strand. Take 10 minutes off that figure and you are more in the ballpark. It is literally only across the bridge.

I noticed that:
The fees for a standard single room for the Commonwealth Hall, on my digs is: £4915.75-£5273.50, but on the University London web site there is written:
Single Room £18.55 (40 weeks = 5194)
Twin Set £18.65 (40 weeks= 5222)
Large Single £19.90 (40 weeks= 5572)

Do you know more about it?
Is there someone who lives there that can tell me how much it is?

Hi GiuGiu

The prices on the University of London website are the most up to date. Kings have not updated since the 2007/8 academic year. The fees for next year have not yet been decided, but the current ones can be seen on the website.

International is currently £19.60 per night for a single room, including food, and for those worried about short meal times, IH's restaurant is open for two hours in the morning and two hours in the evening, instead of the usual one hour as seen in most of the other halls. It also has the most facilities for residents.

Hey, I'm thinking of going for GDS, SS, then KCH in that order- not sure about the rest. I was really confused between GDS and SS but then I went up to london for the day (I live in brighton) and did the walk between Guys campus (where I'll have most of my lectures etc) and the two residence locations. That totally made up my mind. If I'm leaving the library late or something I really dont want to have to walk for 25 mins rather than 2 mins alone on the mean streets of london... They look pretty much the same distance on the map from Guys- but they're totally not!!
Also, I was just wondering if the fees for accomm included all bills (water, electric, internet etc) and if there is any other costs I might not forsee when budget planning for next year
