Well one thing is for sure, you need to calm down and relax. Stalling makes you panic (and it did me!) and then panicking causes other troubles.
If you think negative thoughts then you'll worry too much about driving and then you won't be able to do anything correctly. Take it one step at a time.

You do know the MSM? Mirror, signal, manoeuvre. Just remember that and you'll be a whizz in no time. So check your mirrors (both of rear view and side mirror), indicate and then checking mirrors again is a positive thing and then you manoeuvre the car.
As for the stalling bit you need to slowly lift up the clutch and with your other foot accelerate in time. For stopping, just keep your foot down on the clutch and you move down the gears - that's what I do anyway

Maybe ask a parent or someone who is over the age of 25 and has had there licence for x amount of years ( I think 3? ) Maybe you will feel calmer and get the hang of things more, then start taking driving lessons again?

Reply 5

go buy a motorbike. less things to worry about. and far cheaper

Reply 6

This is completely wrong, just because you have had two instructors, it doesn't mean there is no one out there that can teach you well
Change again, and again, until you find someone who is patient and understanding

Who cares if other drivers beep? They were in your position once, they all had to learn how to drive and stalled numerous times, so ignore them, theres nothing they can do

Yeh, KimberelyJane has a good point!
Ask a parent or someone who has been driving for more than 3 years and is over 21 (is on DVLA website) years of age to take you out when they can

You just need to relax, and eventually you willl pick it up. It takes some people longer than others. It can be frustrating but theres no need to worry. Also try doing some practice in your own time to brush up on your driving skills.

I've had 11 and I love it. Although I do stall sometimes, but just relax and enjoy it. Think about how good it will to be to have your own car and never have to use buses again! Don't release your clutch too fast and don't panic!
Try and practice out of your lessons with someone in a car park or something or watch someone else drive (Weird but it helps me)

Thanks guys but I think Im just gonna give up
I had a lesson this morning and it was sooo bad and then we tried the main road and i kept stalling and i just wanted to cry so much I cant do it.
Everyone in my family passed within like 2months of learning and they wont take me around because our family car is huge.
I cant afford £18 a week because i didnt realise how long it was gonna take. i thought maybe 4 months but at this rate its just gna take ages
:frown:
then i just wanted to cry so much

4 months?? It took me around 8 months.
Learning to drive IS expensive and not everyone is great at it. But keep it up  It'll be a shame to give it up now.

Noooo! Don't give up! I think the fact you get so nervous and panic about it is probably worse and the fact you have pissy instructers.
But yeah, maybe change again. I have a nice woman who is patient with me when I do dopey things. It doesn't matter how many it takes you, it varies with everyone, my mum had like 50!
Do you just stall all the time?

EDIT: Perhaps you should take your theory and if you pass it'd give you more of an incentive to drive. Plus you'd be more confident on the road as you know all the hazards and signs?

Reply 14

Who is your instructor anyway? A well known company or private person?

Reply 15

Everyone learns at a different pace, some people pass within months because they drive around the lessons, others take longer simply because they are more nervous.
Dont give up though, change to a friendly instructor and keep going.
I know people who took lessons for 4 years, failed 5 times and passed the 6th. Besides 12 lessons is hardly anything.
Keep at it and you'll pick it up eventually. Good luck.

Reply 16

Yeah it took me more like 7 months, and that was with lessons AND practise in my own car so it would have taken me faaar longer had I just been relying on lessons.

As for the stalling, 12 lessons really isnt actually that many and I know I was definitely still stalling then, god the first time I got in my car (having had several lessons in my instructors car) was awful! I wanted my dad to send it back! But it does just click, focus on the clutch control and once you're confident with that everything else will just fall into place! Believe me, it's better to persevere now than to have to try again when you're older (or never learn to drive at all!) And try and find an instructor who is patient, or explain to your current instructor how you are feeling and him/her getting short with you is really not helping and if it continues you will go elsewhere. Don't give up!

Reply 17

Don't give up now, you can do it!!!
Took me 2 instructors, 2 parents and 12 months to manage to pass my test and it is SO worth it!! Even so I reckon I had at least 100+ hours practising with my parents and at least 50+ hours with my driving instructors but trust me it pays off!
I highly recommend you start to learn the basics from people who have their own driving license, as you know them you will be able feel at ease! Also driving on private land also works if you know someone!
You will get there eventually, like other users have said we were all in that position once and me, not so long ago!

I just cannot drive! I have had 12 lessons and I still stall and all we really do is drive around the block because I get everything wrong. The mirrors, signal, clutch, steering just EVERYTHING.
How the heck do I improve or shall I just give up? I just can'#t get the hang of it. I changed instructors and I still can't do it.
:frown:

rant over!

Try learning with an automatic gearbox? That'd take some of the difficulty getting the clutch right out of it!

Reply 19

just dont let go of the clutch and keep reving then you wont stall.
