I was wondering the feasibility of this too.

I think it would depend upon both your reasons for now doing a gap year and the popularity of your course. Perhaps you could persuade them that what you are doing is worthwhile and relevant to your academic career at Edinburgh however I feel that they will be pretty hard to convince. If you aren`t sure you want to start a course for other, less important (to them) reasons then they will be seriously unimpressed. For courses such as english, history, medicine and vet medicine, philosophy and law etc places are seriously oversubscribed (for some arts courses there are literally several dozen well qualified students applying per place, I know, I overheard the wails of anguish from many refused applicants this time last year in the arts admissions office). At the moment you are not actually an Edinburgh student but rather a number on a sheet of paper to be confirmed when you arrive. A protective net and helpful bureaucracy is established when you matriculate but until then you have no clout in any dealings with the university. Do not think that if you decide to now defer a year you will be automatically accepted the following year. I know from experience that university admissions tutors hate both uncertainty and unnecessary problems from prospective students. If you are willing to risk your place at a fantastic university for this opportunity in London then go for it but be wary that your deferment this year does not turn into a rejection next year if you have to reapply.

Hey!

I was at the Biology open day the other day at Edinburgh (for those who were offered a place) and the guy told us that "you can take a gap year and we'll keep you a place for next year, so long as you let us know". I suppose you need to say you're doing something constuctive, but they were really cool about it. Then again as skegs says, it depends on your course (some are haveily oversubscribbed), however, there is no harm in asking. If you have an offer, speak/email the school's liaison officer and I am sure they will be able to answer you (thats their job) - at least the Bio one was really nice.

hope that helps,
