So let me get this straight....your course is to produce some form of a database and so you opt to use excel which is a spreadsheet application not a database application.....ok.....good luck you will most definately need it.
i cant do it on access, i have to use excel, but i just need an idea, i can do the rest easy!
Excel isn't ideal for making a database...but with a pivot table or 2 and some nice formatting it's do-able (although I've no idea why any exam board would require you to bodge a database project thrugh using a spreadsheet instead of db software  )
You could create a database of anything - students in your school (complete with emergency contacts, subjects and exam results), staff in an imaginary company, stock control for an imaginary company etc etc.

It's like if your teacher asked for an essay and you drew a picture because you couldn't write the essay!! lol
if u have to do it on excel then its not a database its a spreadsheet
the posibilities of what you do are endless but for inspiration I sujest that you look at what other people in your class are doing and maybe you can do a similar one to them.
no-one in my class has a clue.... i think some of them dont even speak english.... theyre still learning that vlookup crap.... i finished that early so now all i can do is sit around and try not to look at porn...

No you can produce a database using spreadsheet software - you can even produce a relational database of a sort using vlookups (sorry excel geek) and query the data using pivot tables (and if you use named pivot tables you can reference the query data to produce half decent reports). It's not ideal (mainly because there is no way of holding historic data without creating a dated duplicate and changing data on the copy) and it's slow to retrieve data compared to access but it's in theory possible.

Have a go at access it is actually incrediably easy - espcially if you dont go including forms and reports. Do a search on google for access tutorials.
im an ideot, and i need someone to help my feeble brain! pls give some sort of idea ona database coursework using excel-- anything!!!!!!
Ithink that you should not use a video rental one as this has been done so many times, as well as the liabrary. A good idea is to design a database for your local shop, not something like Tesco as they already have there own perfect database. A car hire area is also good, anything as long as its not a big company.
ok this will sound really thick but whats the difference between a database and a spreadsheet
A relational database (like access) contains the equivalent of lots of spreadsheet like tables linked together...makes it possible to link (for example) multiple customers to one sales person without either having lots of different rows with the same saleperson or having customer 1 customer 2 customer 3 etc etc for each salesperson which is the way you would have to structure the same information on a spreadsheet.
Plus you can get more data in a database than you can in one excel worksheet.
I did A level computing. Your allowed to implement the project in any way you see fit. Id est you can do it on Access, Word, Excel or even programme it fully if you are capable. You are not restricted to Excel.
