Yes! At the risk of using an over used buzz word, Leeds is one of the most "multi-cultural" cities around. You have absolutely no need to worry that there won't be any Asian people here, there are huge communities of every ethnic background living in Leeds.

That is right frank4king..there is a great cultural mix in Leeds! It is fabuluso....variety is the spice of life (I like that saying....). Most people are very friendly and it is easy to make mates and have a laugh!

Yes, I've been here for a number of years and I live in the heart of one of Leeds' Asian communties. There are lots of 'ethnic' shops, mosques and Asian businesses around the area. Quite a lot of the housing/accomodation businesses are also run by people from the Asian community.

Thanks - so would you say there is quite a big community actually within the university among the students?! Also I don't know whether you'd know or not, but is there any of the leeds accomodation campus's that is closer to the asain shops - especially butchers, so it is more convinient to get halal meat from?!

when i went to leeds i didn't see 1 asian person on the way to uni. The place was full of students too. Maybe i must of missed them. I found that manchester had alot of asian people.

There are halal butchers 15 minutes from campus in Hyde Park. There are many Asian supermarkets eg. Maumoniat, there's a big one with a butchers inside it just across the road from Maumoniat, jsut ask the guys in there. Almost all the takeaways are halal.

I don't know about a big Asian community WITHIN the university, it seems that there are more serving the university population than IN it, if you see what I mean. There are Asian/Indian sub continent students who are international or Masters students, but I don't know how many Muslim/Asian students there actually are at Leeds - I haven't thought about this much before, but its true that hardly any of my classes have Asian students, perhaps its because of the subject I study!

Its quite funny because i have heard both that there are loads of asian in Leeds and that there are hardly any! But thanks for your replies! Thats great to know that most the takeaways are halal - saves me a job cooking!

Its a bit annoying really - i went to see the university in september, but we didn't get a chance to have a look around Leeds the 'town', we just saw Leeds Uni and went home! Your rite Nas7232 - when i was there i think i saw a group af 3 asian boys an thats it - but seeing as though UCL is your first choice i'm sure you'll have NO problems finding asians there!

I wondered if anyone knew if there were any Iranian shops cafés or restaurants around? I've got used to the new Persian sweet shop at home. Also, is there any significant Iranian community in Leeds?

I play footy in Leeds nearly every other Saturday (shame i don't know my way around) and when I go by I see loads of different ethnic minorities but it depends where abouts in Leeds, sorry I can't help you where about they are but i'm sure there are halal take aways around. But hey I'm an asian Muslim and I'm definetely going to Leeds Uni as I deferred my entry last year, so hey there's gonna be at least two of us if thats anything to go by. lol :p:
