once your in the city centre then yes you can get everywhere by foot. UEA is 3 miles from the city centre though so most people get a bus in or cycle (usually only if they are on their own or with other cyclists)

Yeah you could get on fine biking in to Norwich as long as you're reasonably fit (I did not enjoy it but I was VERY unfit when I tried!). From the uni there is a decent cycle root and there are plenty of places to put a bike in town. The only consideration is if you're going to buy stuff then carrying it back on your bike, it might be easier on the bus.

Either way I'd say unless it's going to be very hard to get your bike here I'd bring it just in case as there's plenty of room to store at the accommodation. Make sure you get a d-lock as well, they're meant to be the most secure kind (though it didn't stop mine from being stolen :frown: )

I'd say it's maybe a 15-35 minute bike ride depending drastically on how fit you are. Then probably a 50-1hr10 walk right to the centre, again depending on fitness levels.

The bus takes about 20-30 minutes.

Thanks for the estimates (and sorry to hear about your bike kpwxx D: ) I haven't cycled for awhile since my hometown is extremely bike-unfriendly, so it may take me some time to get used to the new cycling exercise lol but 15-35 minutes actually sounds fair enough  I'm seriously considering getting a bike for my time at UEA now. I'm an international student so I'll have to rent or buy a 2nd hand one though.

I think it is useful to have one. Also good for if you move off campus in later years.

If you do want to buy one check out gumtree when you get here

It's just a website where anyone can post adverts.

Lived there when I was in first year. As a hall its not bad at all, its the same inside as Colman/Victory/Paston e.c.t if you've seen any of those. Decent size room- nice big desk, lots of shelves above the desk, the shower has a little step between it and the rest of the bathroom so it doesn't flood. Kitchen is quite big, has a water dispenser for instant hot water so no need for a kettle.

I'd imagine it might be more expensive to hire than to buy!

Another option is buying one then selling it on again.

Cycle Recycle works with UEA to offer a buyback service so you could buy one then sell it back to them at the end of the year?

Also don't forget freecycle (misleadingly nothing to do with bikes specifically, it's just where people can put any free stuff), they sometimes have free bikes if you're quick!!!

I got Britten House too. Apparently it's pretty good! It's one of the newer buildings I believe

Ahh I think I read about it before but forgot, thanks for reminding!

Where's that freecycle btw? Is it on campus and held regularly?

I think the operate regularly from campus yes, but it should be pretty easy to find - they will have a stall during freshers week advertising what they offer so it would be hard to miss. Probably at the same time as freshers fair.

If any 1st year students want to band together to find accommodation PM me, I don't really want to stay with 2nd,3rd and postgrad students.

I appreciate that you'd like to be with other freshers.

But just in case you do end up having to live with non-freshers, my boyfriend lived with UEA second years in his first year as the art uni didn't offer accomm for him, and he got on really well, and made some really great friends, who I also became really good friends with. It doesn't mean you have to miss out on socialising or nights out or anything, plus there are still other ways to meet other freshers - societies/clubs, in your lectures, fresher's events. Then meeting those people's flatmates.

In my experience, second years are no less keen on having fun than freshers.

sorry just a quick general question - I applied for student finance and my accomodation using a new Gmail email account (said on UEA website to avoid using a hotmail email address for accomodation application incase any replies didn't get through properly or something). But my hotmail email address is the account that receives general emails from UEA and UCAS. Is this ok? I'm probably being a bit over the top I just don't want any confusion if I'm using different emails for different parts of my application.. thanks haha!

Should be fine! Though if you want to be double sure give the accommodation office a phone to check. UEA will be using the one you gave to UCAS in general but your email is not how accomm identify you - they use your student number, so it shouldn't matter that you used a different email.

The reason they say to use a non-hotmail email is because a while back they had a series of incidents where people gave out their passwords after being tricked by phishing emails, and those accounts were then used to spam email others. When hotmail gets a lot of spam from a specific domain (uea.ac.uk in this case) they block ALL emails from that domain for a certain time period. So people were not getting emails from the accomm office if they had a hotmail email.

However, this hasn't happened in aaaaages, like 2 or 3 years, I guess they still do it as a precaution because accommodation offers are pretty important!

i wouldn't be, the bus stop isn't too far away and in 2nd and 3rd year you'd have to get used to not being able to roll out of bed. anyway no point worry until you have your room offer.

Yeah as jelly said it's really not that much of a worry.

Your earliest lectures will be 9am at the earliest. I live in the city and did while studying for the last year, and it was fine - for my lectures (which were all 9am as it was a PGCE) I could get up at half 7, and I take ages to get ready! So not too bad, you're only 5 mins from the bus stop and they run very frequently.

I posted a few pages ago about Mary Chapman court if you want to have a look
