Hey all,

What sort of stuff were you asked at at interview?

Hey, so I'm in the same position as you, applying for Cam linguistics this year. From the information I've gathered, they'll ask about any books you mention on your personal statement, possibly throw out a couple of abstract questions in areas you've mentioned that you've studied (A Level eng lang does language acquisition so I'd expect a question on Chomsky and nativism/behaviorism debate probably), then they'll give you a random language and ask you to extrapolate some things about that language from the info given.

That's what I've gathered anyway! If you want to chat about it I'd love to talk to someone in the same position that I am in!

Hey

I'm actually a mature EU student so I didn't do A-level English language, but I know very well who Chomsky is, although I prefer David Crystal

Oh that's so cool, where are you from?! And hahaha I only mentioned English language because I've done it at A Level, so that's the kind of question I might get that's all!

And ooh that's a controversial opinion, as most people believe that his word is gospel truth! I like Crystal a lot more and have a lot of different opinions to Chomsky but I have mad respect for everything he's done, I just think he can be a little bit... stale. Crystal understands modern linguistic identity and remains much more relevant than Chomsky I think!

I'm actually from Hungary, but I'm trilingual and I want to specialise in English linguistics in later terms, although I'd be lying if I said I'm not interested in linguistics in general or the linguistics of other languages.

and... wow, We're so much alike!

Oh my gosh that's awesome!!! I have so much respect for people who can speak many languages, I feel like an idiot for not taking my A Levels in different languages! If you ever want to chat linguistics I'd be more than happy to because I just freaking love talking about different ideas and theories!!
Hi! I'm currently studying Linguistics and Comparative Literature at Queen Mary, University of London, which is RG. I'm on course for a 67, and got 63 and 65 in my first and second year respectively, which I know is below par for Oxbridge. However, in my first year, my health deteriorated and I was hospitalised about six times, and in my second year, I had a baby. I still managed to get high 2.1s and firsts in my relevant modules, and even handed in an assignment two days after my son was born (and only asked for an extension for one assignment, which I think shows dedication and an ability to handle a high workload) I hope to apply for Linguistics, but given that most will be applying with a higher degree classification than I, is it a wasted application? Thank you

Hey there! I've applied for Linguistics at Clare college - nice to meet you!
What are the interviews like?
Linguistics is a cross between the sciences and humanities, so is there a stronger focus on one or the other? Do students write more essays or do more experiments? Thanks.
