Interesting choice of requirements. 13 press-ups in one minute is nothing, yet 35 sit-ups is a significant task. Or maybe that's just the way I see it.

I'd go along with that Richard. I wouldn't say "significant", but certainly more demanding than 13 press-ups. Some people have real difficulty with press-ups though, so we perhaps shouldn't judge; so much so that I can only assume it's genetic.

I'm sure it used to be the case that the pressups were untimed. In fact, for my last AFT that was what we did; the appropriate number of consecutive pressups, down to your partner's fist on the mat. You could pause all you liked. Situps were still done in a minute, but were alright.

The bleep test's a bit easy; even at my most unfit I've never had to do much more than pant a little afterwards.

If you were to pause, would the count reset to zero? After all, if it's untimed, and you are allowed to pause, theoretically anyone could do 100 press ups (admittedly in 24hrs).

Also, are the tests pass/fail, or do they follow a scoring system. I've heard that the RAF are adopting the Army's Basic Personal Fitness assessment (BPFA), which this seems very similar to. The only difference is the Army have a minute and a half, with the obvious increase in the "pass" threshold. (no such thing as a "pass" 'cos it's an assessment, not a test. Red/Amber/Green give an indication of fitness. All very PC).

Well, good question. At my last AFT I was told there was no time limit for pressups, so after 8 or so I took a pause for a few seconds before battering out the last. You have to pause in the "up" position, so I guess the theory is you'd get tired if you took the piss. Plus the hope's there that you're not going to take the piss too much in the first place.

The test's a pass/fail here, but at OASC I'm certain it's a weighted good/average/bad system. At IOT it's pass/fail again.

I did the pre-IOT fitness tests a couple of weeks ago and it was 2 minutes of both press-ups and sit-ups. You could rest inbetween reps; in the down position for sit-ups and in the up position, resting on knees for press-ups. Some people were steady doing one or two every 10 seconds, whereas others like myself did as many as possible until failure then taking a hefty rest before carrying on.

Although Red/Amber/Green wasn't mentioned specifically, there were Fail/Pass/Good watersheds; I believe these were higher than those required in the OASC tests, which would make sense really.

To be honest guys I believe that 13 press-ups in a minute is a bit of a joke, 35 sit ups is a bit better but still not too difficult if you are moderately fit.

I have an informal interview with a squadron leader at my AFCO, any ideas what i will be asked if anything and if i sholud go dressed smartly?

P.S. sorry where are my manners, Hello everyone, hope you are all well!!

No its not my filter, my AFCO arranged it so I could speak to an officer, he says that an officer would be able to offer me more info on all aspect of the RAF as an officer. Also I have arranged a base visit with him for after my exams so I am happy with that.

Thanks for the advice bex.

it'll be a chat about officer life, maybe a bit about the application process... ask as many questions as you can, this is one of the better oppurtunities you'll get to pick their brains...

he probably won't mind but try to keep most of it in your head and write it down after... otherwise you'll look like a journalist
