This happened to me the other day when I took a really big yawn, I thought my jaw had locked. It didn't though.

I got that sometimes, like if I stretched my head back into my neck and opened my mouth and it hurt for a few minutes.

OK. I'm going to sound like a total H&R regular here (I'm not), but...

Oh my word! I get this fairly frequently, I thought I was alone! I get it when I go to take a big bite of something, and occasionally if I yawn too wide. It is a proper cramp, and the muscles underneath my jaw go really tight. I've had it for a few years now. I usually catch it pretty early now before it reaches full tightness, and there's no pain for more than a couple of seconds.

I can't recall at the moment what I usually do when it does happen, but it scared the life out of me the first time and it was really painful.

Does anybody know what it is?
I get this quite often, especially when I yawn.

I find that the best countermeasure is to open your mouth/jaw as much as you can, then it fades away instead of becoming really painful. With this method, I am able to stop all chin cramps from happening before they get bad.

Yes, now you mention it, I think I open it as wide as possible too, and it quickly fades as you say. It seems to happen randomly though, and still catches me out occasionally!

Happens here as well. Usually when yawning. Nothing ive found to make it go away quicker, usually fades out after a minute on its own. Very weird.

stretch the muscles regularly and get someone to help you to stretch it out like the footballers do when they have cramp

I get something similar (I think), which is a cramp, very similar in feeling to foot cramp, in my neck. When it first happened it was quite a fright-filled moment. But now it's my little bitch, and I can sort it out in no time.

I get it when yawning, but i can usually fight it and get out of it before it fully cramps.

I get those as well.. im 21 and I had those under chin cramps just four times, and it's not like it hurts a lot, it's just really uncomfortable. I used to think I get them because I had a jaw surgery and it started happening after the surgery. but i guess it has nothing to do with it.
But I found out that when it happens, the best way to get rid of it is to push that thing in (whatever it is, sometimes it feels like a small lump) underneath the chin and when i do the pain goes away and it's back to normal.
Does anyone know why it actually happens? Is it normal?

I had a lower wisdom tooth out approx 25 years ago,
I was on holiday in Bavaria at the time, it took three hours to extract and ever since if i yawn too widely, i get a terrible knot of cramp (which locks my jaw).I have to keep my mouth open and massage the "knot", hurts like hell for about 15 seconds and then gone. Happens about three times a year.
Hello. The best way to quickly get rid of the cramp under the chin on the neck is to lift your chin upwords (tilt head back) and *GENTLY* massarge the neck apply pressure slightly as needed. the thumb and finger next to it usually are the best for rubbing it to get both sides of the throat evenly.

I find this makes it fade within seconds. Do not stretch the mouth further as this can increase the tightness of the muscles as the spasm.

I am not a doctor or anything of the kind but I find this is by far the best way for me.

As for what causes it, I believe it's todo with the oxygen flow to the muscles, smokers like my self tend to have it more by my *Opinion* Bananas have been known to help with crap in all body parts also.

The muscle in question is super tiny so if u strain to do something it will cramp.. Such as eating a big sandwich, yawning or in my case stretching my chin down to shave n when I use face wash etc..Will happen especially after a long day at work spent talking etc.Best solution is menthol oil deep rub start slow n rubbing the cramp harder away till it goes. Also try and relax all the muscles look straight ahead and keep your mouth closed.Hope that helps, I feel your pain..Peace
Yeah. It's called cramp
been having this muscle cramp for years, mild and it goes away withing seconds while opening and closing jaw. Until Wednesday, i got the most massive chin cramp ever, ended up in ER with torn orbicularis oris muscle, which kinda paralyzed my left side of mouth and my left eye is watery, they told it will recover with time, but not excactly how long. No pain , but discomfort
