When I planned a trip to France, a lot of people told me you had to be 21 or have been driving three years to drive on the continent, but I'm pretty sure that's not true. As far as I know you just need to be 18 and have a full license.

18 and full licence. people are probably confusing the restrictions with hiring a car abroad.

Most EU countires let you drive as soon as you've passed your driving test (ie. when you're 17), but in France you have to be 18 to be able to drive. If you've had a driving license for less than two years you have to stick to the 'wet weather' speed limits in France, which is 110 kph on the motorway and 100kph for dual carriage ways.

You don't have to update your license or anything to drive in France, although you can download an IDP form from the RAC website. THis is basically the same as your normal driving license, except it's translated into 10 different languages so it's easier to understand. But legally, you just need your normal UK driving licenses (though the IDP might make it easier!)

25 is the most common mainly because this is when your insurance drops in price by loads.

Yup - lots will let you drive @ 21 but they'll charge you a young/inexperienced drivers fee on top of the rental price (virgin charged me $3 a day back in 2000)

Ours wwas $25 last year! Feeling slightly robbed!
Yeh in European countries you can drive with a full licence, but further afield i think i remember reading you need to order a permit, not sure if thats the same as a IDP?

When i went to Turkey last year, i hired a scooter, which was loads of fun and really cheap, something like 10 million for a whole day. I think you may have needed a licence or something, but they just werent bothered, i didnt even wear a helmet and passed loads of police, here my friend did that on his scooter and got prosecuted, £100 fine and 3 points!

Scooters abroad are so dangerous1 Dont do it kids. my mum came off one in Greece and took all the skin off her right leg and right fore arm.
