Advantages & Disadvantages.

Ok, so basically I'm doing a presentation at uni on the advantages and disadvantages of going to university currently. I would really, really appreciate it if you guys could give your opinions on the pros and cons of going to university and what you think regarding the matter. What are the benefits? What hinders you/your performance?

pros: you become more mature because for most students it's the 1st time they've lived away from home properly. You get to meet new people. You get to study a subject properly.

Cons: Expensive especially if you can't get a job when you graduate. Also you could work instead of going to Uni and pick up experience that way.

What hinders me or performance: TSR means i get no work done, Cramming doesn't work so I've got to find a new way to revise

I think it is better to go to Uni because it increases your employability especially in the current climate of economic uncertainty

Thanks for that  I'll bump this thread, but thanks for your contribution.

Aside from the above

Pros: You get to study one subject that you should have a passion for (in theory) at a deeper level, with the possibility of going in to one singular point of it (going from the "open" BA to a "concentrated" PhD).
You're totally expected to fend for yourself. When you get a letter from TV Licensing, it's up to you to sort it out, not your mum, if you live in halls; when you run low on food, it's up to you to walk to the nearest store, not your mum...BUT - when things go totally wrong, the Uni is there to fall back on...so it's a "learning curve" for the 'real world'.

Cons: You need to know how to manage money well, or find yourself a job that will fit around your newfound social life and masses of reading, or else you're going to sink very quickly into "the red".

What hinders my performance: Not taking it seriously in the first term (i.e. not reading the 'recommended reading', which now I've started doing has actually improved how I understand things)
Going out far too often (simply due to the fact that staying in when your entire flat and/or friend group goes out makes you feel like you're either "working too hard" or "missing out".)

Pros: better career prospects, meet new people, get contacts, study something you enjoy, independence, gives you chance to mature and develop intellectually, gain transferable skills...

Cons: cost, hard work (not necessarily a bad thing but you know...), it isn't for everyone - chance of being disappointed, you could be getting work experience in a job instead, social pressures...

What hinders me: getting distracted by the net, getting things done 'last minute', money issues (currently job hunting again), getting tired of studying - I get burnout easily, stress hinders my peformance...

Hope that's helped
