Tang Hall is your main concern. It is a reservation for neerdowells and you will only find yourself getting into problems. I am not sure on the student areas in York but I am guessing Fulford would be ideal.

thankyou very much for the tip!

I live in Tang Hall, and it's generally okay (admittedly not the nicest area though), but there are specific areas to say away from - Fourth Avenue shops mainly.

I used to live on Hull Road and that was fine, and had some friends in Badger Hill too. Badger Hill's a pretty nice area.

York is generally a lovely place. I've lived here for 20 years and never had any trouble.

However there are certain areas that have a negative image. Tang Hall is one and Clifton is another.

Just try to stay near the city centre and you'll have a great time
If you can afford it, go live in Fulford. It's close to the uni and a really lovely part of York, plus it's easy to get into town.

I lived in Tang Hall for two years, but close to Hull Road, and found it ok. Yes, if you get further into Tang Hall you get groups of kids with nothing to do who will give you grief. For example, I remember one group of teenage lads watching me have a bike accident once (had too much shopping and had to swerve to avoid a car that was doing some odd manoevres on the road) and injuring myself, and instead of seeing if I needed help they just fell about laughing and called me a stupid cow and whatnot :eyeball: But I guess you get those kinds of people anywhere in the UK. So stay away from those types and you'll be fine; if looking at Tang Hall try to get a house on the outskirts

I would recommend Fulford though, as lots of students live there and there is an Aldi and it's generally a lovely area. Close to the river too and about 20mins walk from campus.

Compared to some cities there aren't really any areas to avoid.

There are some parts that aren't quite as pleasant, sure, but it's a relative thing. Pretty much, York is wonderful and any issues will be the exception to the rule.
I live in Tang Hall, as do most of my friends, and we've not had a single problem. The locals are . . . how to say this diplomaticly . . . distinctly working class. Lots of single mothers, young parents, people on benefits etc. However, they are largely decent people and the student population is friendly enough. The facilities are pretty good - I live right next to a bakers, chemists, about four take-aways, super-market, hair/beauty salon and bus stop. I regularly wander around at 3am (usually walking home from town after a night out) and I've never felt threatened.

Plus, there are loads of nice student houses, and it is close to the university with great bus links into town.
You don't live on Alcuin Ave by any chance to you, or Fifth Ave? :p:

the chapelfields/clifton area I guess, a couple of years ago I remember being threatened by a group of stereotypical chav types near burton stone lane, all carrying golf clubs stood on a corner.. was a bit random, though I doubt they were planning to play golf.

I've been to a few of the student houses around the burton stone lane area before though and they seem generally fine.. someone said they had their house broken into once though out of term time other than that though I guess it's alright.

Clifton is mainly St Johns students - it's miles away from the Hes West campus, so I'd avoid it.
Heslington Road and Hull Road sort of area is ideal as you are about 10 or 15 mins from campus and the same to town. Fulford is a bit further out but still close and lovely. Thief Lane area is good too. Prices are steeper in the nicer bits so i guess it depends on your priorities.
dont live in heworth or melrosegate or osbaldwick!
I've heard that leeman road is a rough area
Hi guys, this thread is super old and so I imagine is probably out of date so I've closed it - it's better to start a new thread on this to get up to date info :woo:
