It would certainly help to some extent, but if you had equivalent activities not done for DofE that would probably be just as good -- although the DofE shows that you can have commitment and persistence at a set programme.

Also academic achievement is always far more important, but perhaps if there were two borderline candidates who were of very similar academic quality the decision may be made on extra-curric?

Yes, I walked 80 km in 4 days just for fun. It was last week, actually. I do it all the time. :rolleyes:
