Yes, I read that in one of the Dan Brown books. Apparently, the two fingers represent the horns of one of the Egyptian gods, who is the god of virility
its actually to make them look like a stag with horns- stags in tudor times were ridiculed for being naive and foolish on the subject of their partner's extra-marital affairs - basically they were being two-timed and they didnt know about it - re: Shakespeare in a number of plays...

In Dan Brown it was the thumbs up that was the sign of male virility iirc...

Yes, it seems most likely to me that (at least when done to men) it is supposed to insinuate that they are being cuckolded, traditionally represented by a pair of horns.
huh? I always thought that if you stuck two fingers behind someones head, you want to shag them?

i'd go with the cuckold idea.

apparently, if to an italian person, you get the index fingers of each hand and wiggle them up and down, it indicates such a thing. no need to say they'd get very very offended by it.

Well there is definitely a story behind it. The act is more commonly known as doing "bunny ears". I'm not sure about the stag's horns story... but if someone can find a good link explaining how it all started.

There's a story behind the Victory sign, behind the thumbs up, and behind the very British "showing them two fingers".
