Mexico: Stay with family or in a Hostel?

I am going to Mexico with Global Volunteer Projects to do volunteer Journalism.

I have a question though, on what other people think; should I stay with a family or stay in a hostel? My mum and the project organiser both think I'll get more out of it culturally by staying with the family, but I'm thinking I'll probably get more chances to socialise with likeminded travellers if I stay in a hostel. And I definitely wan't to socialise, go out, party, etc, all that

Which should I go for? What would you do? Do you think I'll still get lots of chances to socialise and go out if I'm staying with a family?

In think it depends what you want to get out of the experience. If you want to experience the culture/language side then staying with a family will help you do that. If you want to meet people or a similar age and socialise then a hostel will provide you with that.

You will probably make friends on the project you are doing though so could hang out with them if you decided on staying with a family.
