Don't forget there's always the small chance of changing halls if you make the wrong choice.... One of my friends moved from Goldney to Hiatt Baker.

Hi everyone, would really appreciate some help please =) have trawled through the last 113 or so pages on this thread and have narrowed my choice down to Goldney and HB, but I cant decide between the two!

HB - Catered and very sociable, also I have about 20 contact hours a week so having to walk 40mins to and from uni everyday might just kill me.

Goldney - 15mins walk so much closer to leactures and the town

what are people's thoughts about the two in comparison to each other? choosing is driving me insane!

Lol, its not just me thats been through all the pages then

Personally, i prefered Stoke Bishop to Clifton when i visited Bristol, and so i applied to HB 1st and Badock 2nd (because i wanted catered as well).

Having said that, a lot of people seem to prefer Clifton because it is closer to the Uni, although judging by what people have said in this thread, the walk is quite sociable and not too bad.

If you like them both, then the best bet is probably to put down Goldney as your first choice and HB as your second. That way you might end up in HB because Goldney is oversubscribed, but theres still a chance you'll get into Goldney. If you do this, then you dont have to make the choice yourself :p:. Whereas if you put HB as your first, you're pretty much guaranteed to get into HB going off previous years.

Hope that all made sense.

Put Goldney first (it's oversubscribed for good reason) and then if you don't get in it won't matter, cause you won't mind going to HB as second choice.

You may want to think about your budget - Goldney is relatively expensive when compared to HB - the amount of money you'll spend on your own food will make the living costs higher than HB, plus you'll need a lot of time to cook (you can tell that I don't like cooking much...)
Bit risky I know but ended up going for:

Goldney
Richmond Terrace

Purely 'cos I love Clifton, was gonna do HB as 2nd choice but thought catered probably wasnt the best for me.

Fingers crossed for Goldney now :frown:
Thanks Basho, History Lost in Physics and Paranoid Kid that helped a lot =) wise words!!

What you all applying to study? x
I'm going self catered but I can't cook. So I put down cooking as one of my interests. Now I'll be put with people who enjoy cooking! This plan is going to backfire, isn't it?

HAHA! Canny!

............quite possibly, though you could just tell people you're into haute cuisine and chemical cookery and simply "don't have the equipment".

I loved the options which went along the lines of "going out with friends." Is that because they felt the "staying at home by myself" option would sound too harsh?

Now this could be interesting, cos I've done exactly the same thing...

Ok, three of us have admitted to doing this. This suggests my plan is going to fail and I may have to learn how to cook something.

I'm beginning to think an illegal in-hall catering business could be a very lucrative idea....

Get a george forman .....Toasted Sandwiches/Meat that pretty much impossible to undercook..... s'all good.

Or you could just live off ready meals.

Get some friends at a catered hall on the first day - and go to every meal time there. No one will ask any questions... hopefully :s-smilie:

Don't forget pasta! I really hate* the majority of things that the British do with potatoes. The French; now there's a people that know what to do with a potato!

*New potatoes and baked potatoes will not be eaten, chips or roast potatoes which are even slightly over or underdone will make me swear.

I'll have to make you a potato pancake then.....I'll change you're mind (to be sure, to be sure).

Coincidently, I work in a chip shop, and the evil chips burnt my hands really badly today :frown:

(yes I am classy)

That's not good (burning) - have you seen a medical specialist?

Potato Pancake sounds interesting and I will be making sure I get this next year  (danke).

There's nothing wrong a chip shop - at least it isn't a clothing shop for chavs. Plus you live in the mumbles so it probably is classy...
