same here, I've got an unconditional offer for geography and I'm thinking of accepting it because Bristol is SO good for geography, but I really and truly do NOT want to live at home. I live in Portishead which is a good 50 mins on the bus and 20 mins by car (I don't drive) so living in uni accomodation would make things so much easier for me, and also give me more of a 'Uni experience'... all we can do is cross our fingers!

I'm not sure how much things have changed since I applied, but somewhere on the website it should say which bristol postcodes do not benefit from the accomodation guarentee and those which do. As far as I know if you're entitled to the guarentee then you'll be treated equally in terms of hall preference.

Indeed. There's no guarantee for "all BS postcodes except BS22-28 and BS39-40".

My postcode is BS20 :frown: Its not fair cos there will be people within the BS22-28 etc etc who are less in need of accomodation than me because they drive. Its annoying because I worked hard and got into Bristol which is a good achievement but I'm not wanting to go there because there is a chance I will have to live at home..

I highly doubt you'll have to live at home, it more just means you won't get into the most popular halls, and you might have to be in a student house.
Is smoking allowed in any of the halls?

I don't think you'll be allowed to smoke in your own room as that might trigger the fire alarm. Smoking on the veranda should be fine though.
All halls are non smoking. You have to go outside to smoke, just like restaurants or bars

Living in a student house would be fine by me, I don't really want to live in a hall. Atm I'm deciding between Clifton Hill, Hawthornes and Northwell!

Last year at Wills anyone who put himself down as a smoker was designated a smoking room. AFAIK Your room doesn't fall under the smoking ban that affects bars/clubs etc, because it counts as your residence. Communal areas are non smoking though, obviously.

You know that Clifton Hill House is a hall?
i'd put maybe hawthorns as it's not very popular, but it's still doubtful as to whether you'd get accommodation; there were a good few people who turned up without any at all last year and had to be put in random emergency accom for a while. It's risky, but there's always the possibility that you could get a house with some other people in the same boat?

I thought Hawthorns was oversubscribed last year??
If you dont get a room one often turns up. We had 3 people leave our floor and got one new person who had been in overflow accomodation in guest rooms. Its not ideal but you stand a very good chance of getting a room. As I remember there were only a handful of freshers who didnt get rooms this year.

oh right no I didn't know that! I looked at so many of them the other day its quite difficult to remember what kind of accomodation each of them is!

Have a look at Queens Road - from the outside it's not amazing looking, but inside it's been refurbished this year (work will be complete by sept) and its in a really amazing location (in clifton, next to the student union 5min walk away from precinct.

Hawthorns is apparently being decommisioned - thats what I heard anyways?!

And why Northwell? It's quite far out.....Winkworth is lovely (but then I'm biased).

Richmond Terrace isn't as lovely as the pictures suggest though....it's pretty but is a bit anti-social and arsey in general.

Yes it is...in some...it should say which ones in the accommodation prospectus. Some halls/houses have designated smoking rooms/flats/common areas.

I know the definitely have a few smoking rooms (as in bedrooms you can smoke in) in richmond terrace....think they are a bit few and far between though.

Most of the halls have somewhere sheltered outside to smoke though.

Does anyone have any pics/info of what Woodland Court is like by any chance?
Does anybody have any information about Durdham Hall, Goldney Hall and Manor Hall?

I'd like self catering, with a reasonable room size, not too fussed with en suite, but it would be nice  Just pics or how much they are and any thing else you want to add about the atmosphere, what type of people go to each (generalizations I know...) and your views on it...thanks
