Hey, I'd like to know if anyone here stays in/has visited Wills Hall, as I'm looking to apply there now that I've accepted my Bristol offer (Chemistry), but nobody seems to be able to make their mind up as to whether it's full of rahs and somewhere to definitely avoid, or somewhere with a reputation completely blown out of proportion and is just a really nice place!

I wasn't able to visit it on the interview day due to time constraints, I wish I could have. Should it turn out to be too much, I was thinking about Churchill. Any advice is welcomed, thanks

Yay, Durdham! The best of all halls IMO. But of course, I'd say that, I live here.

The rooms are fairly sizeable. Not enormous but big enough. It's about the same size as my room at home so I was quite happy. Here's mine circa November 2008

Durdham is known as the quieter, more studious hall, I think - but the range of people is pretty large. There's a few party animals, quite a lot of musicians, but we're all pretty much nice fellows and ...fellettes? The bar is the best hall-bar, definitely :p: Pretty big, nice atmosphere and cheap! Plus it's just a nice place to go with your friends if you're bored in the evening.

It also has a music room, so if you're the musical type and keep getting told off for playing in your flat-band too loudly  then you can go there and be as loud as you want.

I'm glad I got into Durdham, actually. They mixed my flat really really well and we all get on surprisingly well. ^_^

Some people from Wills once stole our pizza when we ordered it (It's right next to Durdham so the delivery guys stop there quite a lot)... so I don't like them :p:

I was in Wills, and it's really not that rah. There are a few certainly, but the warden works really hard to try and create a balanced community, although admittedly I think his job has been made harder by the fact that applicants no longer have to write a statement when applying to hall. I had an amazing time in Wills and I'm not in the least bit rah-ish.

When it comes to Rah reputation, Churchill is supposed to be the worst. How true that is I really can't say though, having not been there. I've got plenty of friends who were pefectly happy at Churchill.

Thanks Durdham looks really nice...its looking very likely that I will put Bristol as my firm choice and I'm thinking of putting Durdham my 1st choice accommodation and Manor Hall as my 2nd choice...I'm not thinking of accepting my offer until mid march tho, so do you think that will effect my likelihood of getting good accommodation (ie...Durdham or Manor)

No...accommodation is pretty much unaffected by EVERYTHING if you're guaranteed it. I accepted my offer early, applied for accommodation on the first day possible, am obviously amazing and still got put in the worst self-catered hall :yep: . Which I now love, so don't stress too much! Also, I'd personally go for Manor over Durdham because of the walk. If you don't mind the walk, then you might as well go for UH because it's so much cheaper and apart from the aesthetics, there's minimal difference and a much better social side

Accommodation isn't done on a first come first serve basis.

Word of advice - don't put Manor as your "insurance" hall as it's very popular and will almost likely get filled by first choice applicants. You'll need to put a less popular hall second so if you don't get your first choice, you'll at least get somewhere to live :p:
Thanks for the reply, Paranoid Kid, I was certainly hoping I'd get that kind of answer, as I really like the look of Wills.
On a side note, I had an interview at Oxford (3 nights) and found 90% of the people to be nice and friendly, so I'm sure it can't be any worse than that, or as bad as claimed (granted, by the observer!)
Any inside tips about Wills?

Thanks for the reply...I'm going to wait until all my decisions come through (just waiting on one...) and then go on the open days, and if Bristol is my firm I'm thinking of putting either Durdham or Manor first choice and uni halls as second choice  Any advice on these choices?? I only have the 2007 accommodation prospectus which I got on the open day  and Ongels, which halls are you in??

There's a deadline for applications, and after that they assign it somewhat randomly to make as many people happy as possible.

You fill in some sort of personality trait survey and they assess it against everybody else for the hall you applied for. If they think you're 'suitable' for the hall, you'll get in, most probably :-)

The prospectus won't change much. I'm in University Hall, which I was REALLY unhappy with when I found out, but now I love it. It's pretty damn ugly but you get past that after the first couple of days, and it more than makes up for it in the social life, people and extra £1000 to spend. The only bad thing is the walk, which you learn to live with, but I would definitely not like to be in somewhere like Durdham or Wills because then I'd feel cheated paying more but still having the downside of the location.

Yeah, having ensuite bathrooms, kitchens that can actually feasibly fit 5 or 6 people in them and a lack of vermin scuttling around is a bad thing.

I've lived in Uni Hall and Durdham. IMO, it's worth the extra money.
Dang...my internet breaks for a week, and I miss all the Durdham-loving...

EvenStevens, I think we finally encountered each other the other day - I was the mad blonde wandering round trying to steal peoples wireless. You were asleep at 3 in the afternoon. Shameful.

Haha, was that you? Sorry about that. It's not often I get a day in the middle of the week completely off. I thought I'd take advantage of it :p:

Obviously you managed to get your resnet working again :p:

I wish. Spent about an hour on the phone to someone on Wednesday, eventually decided I should bring it in to see them so they could have another poke, though I'd already done this on Monday to no avail, and the problem only seemed to be when I was plugged into my socket. Did that today, they spent about five minutes looking at it and decided that someone needed to come up and look at my socket. Which was what I sort of realised on Wednesday, but there we go.

So I'm currently perched in the Vet Museum, on Uni Wireless. Can also be found most evenings sitting on the floor of C block basement, where, bizarrely, there is also uni wireless.

Someone's coming to look at my socket tomorrow, I hope. :shifty:

I didn't say it was a bad thing, I said that I wouldn't feel it was worth the extra money.

Ensuite bathrooms: Some people see them as completely necessary. If I had an ensuite, then that would be nice, but I wouldn't pay extra because they're an unnecessary luxury. Considering that I've never had to wait to use the shower, I'm not really the fussed. However, there are ensuite rooms at UH for a bit more money, but not as much as Durdham.

Kitchens: I agree that this is the downside of UH, but they do fit the whole flat in (plus a few more), just not if you're all cooking at once. Which is impractical anyway. Again, I don't think it's worth paying extra because of the inconvenience of having to cook at 7.15 when I wanted to cook at 7.00. I spend a lot of my evenings in a kitchen of another flat, where there are frequently 8 of us.

Vermin: Vermin comes from you being dirty and leaving food/rubbish around to attract it. It's just wrong to suggest that UH is crawling with rats or anything. I have never experienced this, and neither has anybody I know who lives here - because we all live to a certain standard of cleanliness.

To reiterate, UH is basic but has everything you need as a student. It's very sociable, with a cheap bar. The only issue I have is with the walk, but I am very pleased about the money I save, and am looking at living as close to the unversity as possible next year!

You haven't made any drastic changes to your laptop in the past few month have you? Like over Christmas or something

Nope. Closest I came was last Friday, when I was trying to set up a wireless network. But that didn't work, cos I'd got the wrong type, so I undid everything I'd done and all seemed to be fine. Laptop will happily connect to any internet, wired and wireless, except for the ResNet in my room. :o:
