ok, thnaks to the bristol website and you guys, i now have a shortlist. clifton hill house, wills or badock. all im really asking is which is the 'better' hall out of those three. i know its a subjective choice and everything, but id just be interested to hear what your replies would be

thank you!

What are your criteria for 'better'?

I think Badock is renowned for being liveliest. Wills would probably be the highest proportion of 'rahs', though it's not as bad as people make out. Can't say much about CHH, but if you're not looking forward to the Stoke Bishop walk then that would be a better choice.

i wouldn't really mind the walk from stoke bishop, i do it all the time at home. but it would be nicer to be close to the uni.
if i put badock as first choice, would i almost cetainly get in? and im guessing this wouldnt be the ase if i put wills as first choice?

If you put Badock as first choice you'll almost certainly get it (unless it's suddenly become randomly popular since I applied) but if it's you're second choice and you don't get your first you'll very likely get it as well. So why not have it as your second, put Wills or CHH as first and know you'll be happy in whichever of your choices you get?

When it comes to Wills vs CHH it really depends on you. I really like both but I would say that more of the rooms at Wills are nicer and bigger than at CHH. Plus Wills will be cheaper by virtue of being in SB. In my year I think a single with basin at wills was 4200 vs 4800 at CHH (obviously these amounts will have increased since). Both seem to have really good communities and extra curricular activities etc, and CHH has the benefit of being in Clifton, although I do hear their warden is a bit schoolmistress-y. Not sure how true that is though.

Hope that helps a tad anyhow!

EDIT: I just found this which might help: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?p=12344134#post12344134

I'd go CHH then Badock, because I don't like the walk from Stoke Bishop, but think that location aside, most people will get used to most things pretty quickly. Seeing as Wills and Badock are both far away, you might as well put Badock second, because you have more chance of getting it and will also revel in your extra money.

i'd say "that's what they all say" when people think they want to apply to SB halls...but in the end all second years when they find their own houses never go anywhere near there...they try for no more than 20mins walk from uni if not less. Don't forget, Bristol is very hilly too...it's not just a flat n easy 30 mins walk. In the winter when it gets dark early...you wouldn't want to walk home alone, or if it snows it's really slippery and ppl fall over alot :P

And if i remembered correctly Wills and CHH are par on price i think. Which means Wills is on the whole nicer but CHH has the benefit of distance.

And no the warden is not schoolmistressy (well she may look it) but she is very nice .

I'm sure that Clifton Halls are more expensive to reflect Clifton land values in general. Could be wrong though I guess.

I don't think what you say about SB walk is true not least because being in CHH you won't have any experience of it. It's a really easy walk, whiteladies is uphill on the way up but if you find it hard going then you'd seriously need to examine your fitness! When it get's dark early you're still not walking alone because it's still a time lots of people are coming back from classes. The roads are all streetlit as well.

People don't live in SB because it's not geared up for students apart from the halls. It's rare to find student houses much beyond a half hour walk from university, unless you start crossing into areas which serve UWE. Anyhow, you're pretty much guaranteed a shorter walk in second year, so you appreciate it much more!
okay guys, mini fridges - which halls permit them, and which don't?

do you have a mini fridge/know someone who has a mini fridge? where?

thanks!

Durdham doesn't allow them but to be honest if you threw some clothes over it when your cleaner visits (fortnightly) then they'd never know.

No idea about other halls, you can probably find out on their websites.

Meh, Durdham doesn't allow drumkits in the kitchens either but we have onw... and we seldom disassemble it.
The cleaner has seen it numerous times and we've not been told to put it away.

Anyone living in University Hall? What are the facililites like? Whats the atmosphere like?
Everyone seems very interested in accommodation, is it still the case that application packs won't be out sent to those who've firmly accepted offers until May?

Tiny kitchens, reasonably sized rooms. Laundry room is what you'd expect. Bar is decent.

Atmosphere is usually really good though. There always seems to be more of a sense of comradery there than anywhere else

Facilities are pretty standard. The bar is one of the cheapest and our JCR puts on lots of events. There's a study room with a piano. And the atmosphere is very good; people are pretty close and definitely feel a UH attachment.

is it a bad idea to go for one of the self catered accomodations? are you more likely to meet people and have a sense of communitry in a catered halls?
Reply 3018
I think I have decided that I will choose self-catered as i am too lazy to get up in time for breakfast when I don't have lectures or lessons, and I hate the idea of not being able to cook much myself.

I'm thinking of putting Manor Hall as my first choice and University Hall as my second. I'd appreciate it loads if anyone could help with these questions...

Manor Hall
- Is it really ridiculous numbers of people to each kitchen and if so, are they big kitchens that can accommodate this?
- How many people share a bathroom, how many showers and toilets are there in these bathrooms, and are the bathrooms single sex or mixed?
- How social and lively is it?
- Is the age of the building REALLY a massive problem, in terms of heating etc?
- Any stereotypes and reputations for this hall?
- When applying, do you get to choose between single and shared rooms?
- Any pictures of bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens?

University Hall
- How big are flats?
- How difficult is it to get an en-suite?
- Again, are bathrooms mixed or single sex?
- What's the reputation like?
- Any pictures of bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens?

Thanks in advance. Also, if it's not too much to ask, can you please quote me if you reply to this, as I am a stupid, forgetful person.

If you post pictures of bedrooms, kitchens AND bathrooms then you are my god.
Does anybody have any experiences of Woodland Court or Winkworth House? What's the vibe like at Woodland Court?

Thank you!
