Not in itself, anymore than any other method of downloading is inherrently illegal, it is what you are downloading that that determines this.

Ive accepted Bristol as my firm for Biology, looking into accomodation and at the moment Goldney is look like my 1st choice, wondering if any students living there now could give some pros and cons, and if anybody else wants to give me an unbiased opinion lol. Also, any advice for a 2nd choice for self-catering?

there are no cons. its all pros. just read the guardian newspapers review. it was voted the best hall in england.

I have been informed by a Goldney friend that there are rather a lot of rahs there. Not my opinion.

I'll leave you to decide if that's a pro or a con...

fo sho? Was that the 'Are you good enough to live here?' article?

Goldney isn't that rah-y, depends on the intake for that year I suppose.
Bathroom facilities any good?
I could be wrong on this but -

I was looking over the online accommodation prospectus and Durdham seems to be pretty good value for money, considering its all shiny and new with en-suit rooms. Any particular reason for this, or did I misread the figures?

And it's a government-subsidised retirement home.

Is a rah like a posh cliquey person? I can't think what else you'd mean.

I rather enjoy run-down places.

Who said anything about run-down?

It almost hurts how wrong you are. I have a lot of problems with Goldney but there being lots of rahs definitely isn't one of them. In fact, i think that is one of the problems with the place- they have been SO careful not to turn into a place like Wills that all they have accepted are mediocre, middle class people who have nothing to say for themselves. I have met very few truely interesting people at Goldney.

Here's a list of cons (needless to say, Goldney hasn't given me the fresher year i was hoping for):

-You are put into flats. I don't get on with my flat at ALL. Some people really do. But overall i think it's far too much of a risk to take, to risk being with people you could really hate.
-Flats make the hall REALLY cliquey. I've seen what it's like to live in corridors and i wish i'd gone for something like that- you have so many people to possibly get on with, and corridors tend to socialise with each other more.
-The self catering aspect means dealing with a messy kitchen while essentially living with strangers becomes a massive nightmare.
-The flats differ so much- we have one toilet and one shower between 6. Not fun.

Of course, it is a beautiful hall and getting to organise the Goldney Ball this year has been absolutely amazing. But overall if i'd been able to go catered (i couldn't because of my health), i definitely would've done.

I have to agre with some of that. Quite a few of the people seem to blend into one another, the girls in particular.

I don't really agree with any of those cons other than the kitchen mess thing. As for the flats being cliquey, I suppose it really does depend on your flat. Some flats/blocks do tend to keep to themselves. I was probably lucky in that the people I lived weren't the only people I hung around with.

That probably has a lot to do with the geogrpahy of the place, A, I, K and L block being off te quad probably means it's harder to do things between blocks. B and H seemed to get on well, and D block people (wooo D Block) socialised with people from C, E and F, probably because there blocks literally wrap around us.

I like really liked Goldney, and once you get over the initial stumbing block that would be thre for any halls it's a realy great place to live. I'm pretty sure I'm going to apply to Goldney again this year, even though it's a weird situation to be in as a 're'fresher, but I can't see myself in any other halls.
I agree with what you said DB. I think it just proves that it really does depend what flat you end up in. If you're willing to take that risk, then go ahead- you may well end up having the time of your life. But i certainly wouldn't take that risk again- being in corridors is a safer option.

If you can stomach the food, somewhere like Hiatt Baker or Badock. I never thought in a million years i'd say this but it's true!! My best friend at uni graduated from Nottingham and was catered in her first year, and said it was the most brilliant experience- and very different to Goldney.
