Hey,

I want to apply to Goldney, I know it's oversubscribed, but hey, some people will get in!

Is Manor Hall a decent second choice, considering my preferences are towards a good social life/ night life, and closeness to the town and lecture buildings (comp sci)?

If not, which are the best student houses for those things on the Clifton campus?

Also, what kind of things do they want in the accommodation personal statement?

Thanks!

I wouldn't put somewhere oversubscribed as my second choice.

Goldney seems to be the most oversubscirbed by the looks of things, so that will be first choice... then its between all the rest on the clifton campus

as far as im aware, CHH is also oversubscribed... so its then between manor and the rest of the student houses in that area?

Manor is over subcribed. Pick a student house as your back up or have no choice in where you may end up.

Early September.

That's so late.
Well, not too late but everyone round here will already be at uni.

I'm thinking Hawthorns would be the place for me. I was looking at the photos of people there and they weren't all the same shade of orange. (I know, judging on appearances. I'm a bad person)
Not too sure what you'd put as second choice but theres plently time for that. Not even sure if I'm going to Bris, I was but then someone tried to make me go to Edinburgh and choosing is too hard.:frown:

Thanks for the info... on the Bris Acc. website there is a table as to which houses are HUGELY oversubscribed, which are just oversubcribed, and which arent oversubscribed at all

goldney was in the HUGELY oversubscribed but manor was in just "oversubscribed" and they didnt advise against putting one from that section as a second choice, they stated that some places in those residences will go to 2nd choices, so maybe that will work.

only one way to find out but cheers for the heads up!

well thinking about it. If a hall has an equal amount of places and applications, unless some people are unsuitable (which I would doubt), there is no room for people who put it as second choice. Unless they leave spaces for those who put it as a back up, but as far as I'm aware the only people they leave spaces over for are some local students and some Insurance offers holders.

Personally, I wouldn't risk putting somewhere that was even slightly oversubscribed as my second choice. I don't think it's worth the risk.

Yeah.. It's in the brochure..
Oh..
crap..
apparantly they're just for mature students.
How rubbish.

Yeah, it's just a small building next to UH, but it's really nice. It's a bit like a miniture version of Durdham - I wouldn't be surprised if they were built at the same time.
Like you say though, mature students only, which is a shame.

Putting Manor as second choice is unwise. 2007 entry students will be aware that the SB bus is no longer in operation (we weren't) so I wouldn't be surprised if the number of applications to the Clifton halls rises.

balls. I forgot about that.
Reply 509
ohh, really? I was thinking about applying to manor. But oh well, if i go to UH i'll have enough money for everything else.
thought you wanted to choose the retirement home Durdham?
Reply 511
I am, but seeing as it's oversubscribed, chances of me getting in there are slim.

Also she visited the other halls (or something) and dramatically changed her mind on the situation, which was funny to say the least.

Manor > UH.
Reply 513
yes. I dramatically changed my mind.. even though my choices are the same as they were before..?

I merely said that after visiting the others, they have better bars. And if I had the money I would consider applying to HB.
But then again, if I had the money, i'd rather live in clifton.
Reply 514
You know, it's cheaper to live in a student house in Clifton or the 'Precinct' than in Durdham. If money was such an issue, I wouldn't be chosing somewhere ensuite. Medical 'things' notwithstanding.
Reply 515
Yeah.. I know that, but after reading up about all the places, i don't really want to live in a student house, because I want to live in a bigger.. house.. hall.. thing. I mean, Northwell House fills that, but it's far away from the other places of residence.
And when it comes to self catering halls, durdham is just cheaper than manor. then it's UH.
I mean, the fact that it has an en-suite is just a bonus really, considering it's cheaper than some of the other halls.

Manor > UH.

Is that a good choice? Its what im thinking of putting...

well, money is either an issue or it isn't. You can't be that strapped if you still have an element of choice.

Considering HB is catered, it's not really that much more than Durdham. Once you've factored in your food bill that is.
Reply 518
exactly. i'm planning on eating very cheaply. And £900 extra a year is a lot to me. I'd rather have the freedom to buy what ever i like, because knowing me, i'd still waste money on food if i went catered. if I had the money to waste, than yeah, i would go catered. But i'm not going to have it. Plus I actually enjoy cooking.

Money is an issue for me, compared to most people i know and have met. I'm not spending more than like £3000ish on accommodation. So yes, of course i'm being picky up to that limit.

It's not really THAT clear cut. It's not like you can either afford everything or nothing. Money is an issue for me, but that doesn't mean I want to just go for the cheapest place which could jeapordise the amount of fun I'll have in my first year, which is a big part of uni life IMO.

People have certain criteria they want to fulfill. Asking themselves the question, is it worth spending that little bit extra and trying not to think about the fact you cant afford it.

On another point, can anyone vouch for the quality of the food in catered halls?
