people cant apply until the forms have been sent out, sometime in may. the deadline is july 12th (i think) so plenty of time

Once the forms have been sent out are we at any advantage sending them back quickly? or does it not matter as long as its before the deadline?

What would you have as your second choice in that case then?

I have no idea. Maybe I should go for Goldney after all. But then if I didn't get in I probably wouldn't get into The Hawthorns as second... bleeehhhhhh. I really don't want to end up somewhere really really ****. As long as I'm not too far from the uni/shops etc and I'm among quite a few people (ie. not in a tiny student house) I should be OK...

The only reason I decided to go catered was because, whilst there are some amazing self-catered halls, they're mostly oversubscribed, and the alternatives tend to be student houses which don't look amazing. I don't think there are any catered halls that I would be unhappy at.

There's no advantage in sending back your accommodation pack early, I think it says somewhere it's not allotted on a first-come-first-serve basis.

But I guess all the halls will have roughly the same quality of food[???]

No, as has been discussed before. Generally the reputation seems to go, from best to worst; CHH, Churchill, Wills, HB, Badock.

Obviously no-one eats regularly in every hall, so this is largely based on word of mouth, although the Epigram (student paper) did a feature recently and generally agreed with the above list.

Question; People currently in SB, looking back, would you have rather gone to a Clifton hall?

No, if I had to pick again I'd still choose Stoke Bishop. Yes, it means distance, but living in Clifton means some bloody terrible hills! Plus there's a much higher number of students living within close proximity in SB - more of a studenty feel. You'll get the chance to live nearer uni in second year, anyway.

I didn't say the atmosphere was bad - I'm living in Clifton next year! I just think that for a fresher, being surrounded by heaps of other freshers is the best way to start your time at uni. The majority of first years you meet on your course or in societies or whatever will be living in Stoke Bishop.
Come to Wills!

What's wills actually like? Aside for all the 'rah' stuff which personally i think is blown out of proportion and what do you make of the other halls in sb...best to worst?!

One thing to note (as has already been mentioned) is that even the "worst" halls at Bristol are a lot better than some halls at a lot of other universities. This is the general consensus I've got both from people visiting Bristol and Bristol students visiting other people.

Wills is what you make of it, like any other hall. It's certainly got a great community feel to it which the larger halls tend to lack, beautiful buildings (though that shouldn't really be a major factor in your decision to apply here), a legendary warden, and generally a good mix of people.

Hiatt Baker looks like a bit of a **** hole, but that's made up for by its atmosphere and I'd be just as happy if I went there instead of Wills. Churchill is FULL of rahs. Badock has terrible food. Durdham resembles a nursing home in both appearance and general spirit. Uni Hall is overall crappy. So basically, Wills wins!

Erm...well our bathroom is shared by 12 people, but somehow I find myself NEVER having to wait for the loo or the shower. Everyone has different lecture times, therefore everyone uses the toilet at different times.

Oh no...now i'm a bit worried. Is it really that bad?!

Countless others have said that, why are you only now worried?!

ok people, can someone please explain what the hell a "rah" is? I'm guessing it is either a chav or a snob?

Wikipedia
Rah is a derogatory British English slang term for a young upper-middle-class or upper-class person. The term is pejorative and is associated with a number of traditional and contemporary class stereotypes. A rah is identified particularly by his or her wealthy, privately educated background, snobbish personal conduct, and expensive dress.

"Rah" does not have wide currency outside of British universities, and is generally limited to older universities with large contingents of privately educated students. Prominent examples are the universities of Cambridge, Oxford, Bristol, Durham, Edinburgh, Exeter, Newcastle, St Andrews, and The Royal Agricultural College. It is possible the term is not so widely used elsewhere because cores of wealthy, privileged students are less visible and less likely to form in universities based in large, socially diverse cities.

there you go good sir

Hi, I've put Bristol as my insurance choice and I was just wondering what happens in terms of accomodation if I end up going there. Do I apply before hand, am I likely to get anything good in August, or am I guaranteed accomodation at all??

Any help appreciated,

Annie x
