You say that, but if you're living in a flat of 5 or 6 people or whatever, the kitchen becomes a good 'communal' area. Goldney's kitchens have massive round tables that you could probably get 10 people around, massive floor space and good kitchen facilities. It must be great for parties. UH's kitchens are tiny though, if there's more than four people in there it feels very cramped. There's a tiny little table in the corner, because that's all that fits in, and pretty crap facilities too.

I can't estimate the size of the UH rooms in measurements as such, but I can't think of any halls which have smaller rooms.

We must have had just shy of 20 people in the kitchen that night. My memory is hazy so it may have been less, but yes, the kitchens in Goldney are great for social cooking and socialising in general. The fact most kitchen have round tables is a real plus as you can talk everyone at the table easily, the low-ish light over the table maes them perfect for poker too.

There is also a 'common area' in the middle of the flat, it's not a room as such but just a pretty wide hallway that has plenty of room for a whole lot of people, good for watching DVDs with all the mattresses out or drinking games or boardgames and that.
It seems that everybody has received their accommodation packs bar me!
Is anybody else still awaiting in much suspense??

Well yeah, I bet goldney is great, fantastic, lovely etc..
Fact is, it's a hell of a lot of money.
And oversubscribed, so chances of getting in are slim anyway.

I'm tempted to go to HB. But I really like cooking..

Goldney isn't really that much. It's the same price as Durdham and I'd rather have the location than the ensuite any day.

yea its ridiculously oversubscribed, hence i didnt even apply there, despite its benefits etc... the chances are so slim, that youre not likely to get in, and then its all down to your second choice. mine was going to be hawthorns but since the applicatins for residences on the near campus (clifton/ precinct/ town) are likely to rise due to no student bus from SB anymore.. i figured that was alaos going to become more competitive.. so i upped it and put it first just to be safe!

i spose u could argue "if u dont try for goldney, there really is no chance, and ul never know if u would have gotten it" but id rather not risk it!! xx:biggrin:

Yeah, but i'd rather have the extra money to spend on going out, and going to gigs.
and buying food and stuff.

Oh actually, i have a question.. you know some rooms are ridiculously more than others [like in goldney, the fact that en-suite is an AWFUL lot more] what if you wanted a cheaper room rather than the most expensive? Like.. say I put the hawthorns down, and they offered me an en-suite room that I just couldn't afford, would they let you have a cheaper room?

Plus, i'm hoping that they'll put the sb bus back on, just to be really gay to the current first years.
Although i'm not bothered by the walk. Tonnes of people in the same boat, after all.
howd u know how oversuscribed an accommmodartiojn is. i know on the site it says the ones in red but u seem to imply that u know the actual numbers. if so do tell

In the prospectus last year they had little bar charts representing places-applicants.
That's where I got it from..
not sure if it's somewhere else though

i dont know the numbers but it says its oversubscribed, and on ALL the forums etc ive been on, nearly EVERYONE has said they are applying for/ have applied to goldney/ wills. they are by FAR the most popular two, and if all these people put them as their first choice, the fact that the prospectus says its oversubscribed has just been proved,,, big time!xx

ps yea i saw that bar chart too it was ridiculously oversubscribed for goldney!!

do u know how bad wills was
Wills is the most oversubscribed hall.

I wouldn't decided against applying somewhere just because it's oversubscribed, that's pretty stupid in my eyes, some chance is better than no chance. It probably won't affect your experience that much where you end up so why not take the gamble? 260 people get into Goldney each year
and how many ever for Wills, why are you so sure you won't be one of them?

If you're stilll worried you can just make sure to put your second choice as somewhere you'd be equaly happy that is undersubcribed, then you should get at least one of your choices.

Well, after looking high and low, i cant find it. It's probably in my room somewhere..
I'll keep an eye out for it.

But it was pretty bad. As were durdham and goldney

I'm still amazed by how much better bristol accom is compared to places like SOTON and warwick.

yea but i didnt like the undersubscribed places tbh, i didnt do the goldney then hawthorns thing coz i was worried about getting neither, and then being put somewhere in stoke bishop and thats the thing i really didnt want, that walk! no matter how "bearable" it is, i wouldnt appreciate a 40 min walk either way in the rain, ice or snow. lol

im not that fussed about not putting goldney to be honest, i dont like the layout, how its put in flats.. if you dont get put with people you get on well with, youre screwed! obv u can make friends in other flats/ blocks/ halls etc but its just easier with the ppl u live with. there are a lot of benefits to me putting hawthorns and then winkworth, coz i wouldnt mind going inn either really =]

I'd like to apply to churchill.

Just for the nice food.

I'm sure loads of rah's can't be that bad.

Whenever i've been to wills, it's been packed with rah's and was never that bad.

I'm so glad someone else is considering Hillside/Woodside. I haven't seen anyone else mention it. I have the same reservations as you regarding it seeming so secluded though.

Is there anyone on TSR who lives/has lived there who could tell me what it's like?

Theres only 29 people living there, the chances are slim. But if there were....

Have you seen the pistures on the student houses website? Theres trees (plural) in the garden! http://www.bris.ac.uk/Depts/StudentHouses/houses/hillside/hillside.htm

No public transport though. But theres trees. But not so many people.

Actually... I think my dad may have mentioned (he's a lecturer, does conferences most places) staying in accomodation across the bridge. And theres only one I know about...

Yes, but spending one evening in the vague company of someone is rather different to living with them.

No offence, but you seem to think you know a hell of a lot about Bristol on the strength of a couple of visits.
