What happens with accomodation if Bristol is not your firm choice?

Do you get any say in where you get put, and will it likely be a student house?

Thanks

I looked at the college website and found that most catered halls are 35mins away from the main university site. If i'm applying for one of those, should i also get a bike? how do people there get to classes?

You walk. Its fun... well, actually, its not. Though you get some sort of twisted love of the walk across the downs and you get to moan about it with your mates. Good stuff.

:dito: can get a bike if you like, but its quite a steep hill on the way home, which isnt fun in the rain and dark at 5pm - then again, neither's walking back, and that takes longer!

answer to stolenstars; if you have bristol down as your insurance and for some reason end up going there, then you apply for accom after results; the quicker the better.... i think if youre realistic about it (ie dont apply to a massively oversubscribed hall) then youve probably got a good enough chance of getting in somewhere with the specifications you want, even if not your first choice - there are a fair few in Hiatt Baker who missed their firm offer then applied to HB and got in....

Is it REALLY 35 minutes? or is that a generous approximation? And do most students board in catered halls or non-catered? You know, a 35 mins walk alone can be lonely :P

Its probably slightly more (well it was for me...). Its not lonely as you get about 1000 other students tramping down there everyday, so its ok. A good time to bond!

it can take 45-50 mins if walking with rele slow people :frown: - as for me on my own powering it out, takes 35 mins... i quite like walking on my own with ipod in etc - gives me a bit of space, time to think on my own etc...

What if it's raining? or if i've got about 40 Kg of luggage with me when i move in....is there a bus that goes up there all day?

50 minutes?!?!?! Ouch. If you set your mind to it, you can do it in 25/30 minutes. I think it also depends which hall you're in and where your department is. The far side of HB is obviously going to take longer than Wills New Quad.
i'm way down the bottom of HB, basically at the bottom entrance :frown:

as for if its raining, you get wet or get the bus! there's a bus (airport express) from both the airport and the train station which is about £8 return, and then there's the normal buses which you can catch from station/centre town/broadmead etc; 41 goes straight past HB, 40 goes nearer churchill/badock and the 1 and 54 go to the whitetree roundabout, which is about a 5/10 min walk from the halls.... its £3.00 for a day ticket which aint too bad in desperate circumstances (oversleeping, torrential rain etc) - mind you in the mornings the bus can take just as long as walking... i only tend to get the bus if im going in own my own in the dark, ie to swim or something....
Oh okay, so there're busses...can you explain he "just as long as walking" bit? Oh by the way i'm joining the Law department...hope that's not too far.
in the mornings there's a lot of traffic, so taking the bus into town could take just as long as it would to walk into town....
I never once took the bus from SB.... Unless I was going to like broadmead or temple meads or something. And the walk never took me more than 30-35 minutes and I sometimes managed it in 25. Depends how much of a march you've got on I suppose. Though I tended to bike more than walk, think of the uphill bike back as character building!
Um...i got another question about accommodations...

Who usually get the priority when it comes to accommodations (in terms of, who's more likely to get their first choice)?

Undergraduates 1st years, Internationals, Undergrad 1st years that are internationals?

I just thought that since they divide the popularity of halls into 3 columns, will it be okay if my first choice is one of the popular ones and second choice is one which belongs to the second column?

35 mins from Gloucester Road? Which end!!? lol...

well from northwell house which is the orbital house on gloucester road its about a 20 minute walk when you've practised but about 30 at first, there is a seriously massive hill up to uni but thats the same all over brizzle!

if you want to know anything about northwell house just message me, im a first year there (ps its AWESOME)
IMO everyone should just apply to the Hawthorns, I'm studying French and can actually see the lecture theatre from my bed - perfect when I'm hungover!!

As far as I know priority isn't given to any one group as such. I know of people who put a second column hall as their second choice and got in, but it entirely depends on the applications for that year - a hall may got fewer apps one year than another. Depends how much of a risk you're willing to take!

I put a second column house as my first choice and didn't get in... whereas other people who didn't choose it as first or second got in... eeeever so slightly random.

How did that happen?! Where was your second, Northwell House?
I didn't end up in either of my choices but instead ended up in Ronove's 1st choice - the Hawthorns - craziness!
