It looks alright because it's so central but its student housing and I heard that makes it less sociable...

Yes, I hear this too. Why, though?

Firstly because there are less people in one place. If you go for one of the clifton/stoke bishop halls there are more people in each hall and more people around in other halls. Also, in student housing, the rooms are all seperate so less integration. You sort of get this in the flats but you still mix with the people in your flat; apparently those in houses don't mix as much but this is just what I have heard. Also, apparently more post-grads/mature students apply to houses which inevitably leads to less socialising.

Hmm, while I see your points, I think the Hawthorns is big, with almost 200 students? It seems pretty perfect to me. Anyway, thank you  I'll have to take a gander about when I visit.
hello
we are 5 French from an engineering School in Lyon (France)
we come to the university of bristol from the 18th to the 30th of february
we haven't found any accomodation yet, and would be very happy if some people had an empty room in their flat... of something like that. If you have good address of cheap accomodations...

I saw this on facebook, is it true that CHH has a hall cat?

We have two! and a hall dog
well, we used to have two hall cats (charlie and pablo) but charlie got put down a few weeks ago :frown:
pablo's lovely though - extremely attention seeking
and we don't see dora (the dog) much, but she's also a sweetheart.
I'M DEFINITELY GOING TO CHH!!! I love animals  My dog died a year ago and i'm really lonely at home(my mom won't let me have another one since i'll be going to uni), i wanna know how my cousin would react when i tell her that my hall dog has the same name as her

LOL!!
The hall pets are everywhere, Pablo practically lives in my friend's room
Saying that, I'm pretty sure other halls must have hall pets (I know churchill has a cat)
but, no, come to CHH lol!

it all really depeneds what your after. If you want location where your in confort all year round then hawthorns is the place to be. If you put emphasis on having a fun first year and meating a great variety of people then the hawthorns isnt the best of places to go.
That special overflowing mixture that you get in halls you dont get in the hawthorns.

Think of halls like a youth hostle and the hawthorns a hotel. For a breif visit you would jump at the chance to live in a hotel but for a year well it wouldnt be the most interesting time one could have.

I think people shouldnt be so quick to put down student houses.
I mean, yes, you don't have the oppertunity to meet as many people as you perhaps would if u were in a hall, but there are other ways (i.e. joining societies)
and besides once you've settled in at halls you have your own little group anyway.
i've got loads of friends in student houses and they're all having a fantastic time, and throw amazing house parties, and still getting the university experience.
I've applied for bristol in 2008 and I've been up twice, but not seen any accommodation at all. So far I like it but the housing is the big sticking point, I've heard bad things fom some about it but don't know what to think with no real experience.

I'll be looking at the lower end price-wise, not an en-suite but possibly with a basin in the room at a push. Is anyone staying/has stayed in this kind before and what is it like, generally speaking? In particular the facilities and commute to the uni, how much of a pain is being quite a way away?

I tried to see some accommodaton what I came down for interview but none was avaliable, what's the best way of arranging to see inside a room privately (do I go through the uni, department, or hall?)

Cheers!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, student houses are amazing. The mix of people I live with is incredible, everyone is so diverse but we really click. We met people from all the other student houses in freshers week and other Orbital events which meant we got to meet a whole load more people than people from halls got to meet. I've amanged to get the perfect balance between corridors and flats, we seem so much more independant than halls. Ok, a house bar would be nice sometimes but that would be a little stupid. And we do throw the BEST parties.

Preasure
I saw round a hall when I went just by going in and asking. It probably depends on the wardens mood though.
And rooms are pretty variable. I choose one of the cheapest rents in uni and ended up with a giagantic room. I know people with less than half the amount of space I have who pay a few hundred pounds more.
What are you supposed to write on those accomodation personal statements? I've tried writing it a few times but I seriously have NO idea what I'm supposed to be writing about.. is it supposed to be formal? About my personality? My interests? What I'm studying? What? Qoi? Que?

They probs use it to pair you with similar people, so put you hobbies/interests/personality etc.
It isn't formal, you already have an offer, so just write anything that you like.
And something else like being really sensitive to smell/smoke so that they put you in a non-smoking section?

There's a preference thing for that already  But yeah I put how I'm shy at first but then how I'm loud after a while hahahha.

Try and strike a balance between your interests and personality so they know who you'd get on with, but also try and sell yourself a little bit, depending on the Hall. Like for Wills it's good to talk about having contributed/wanting to contribute musically/dramatically/sports etc.

^^Exactly it - you need to show them what you're like and also how you'll be positive addition to the hall- so CHH - contributing musically/dramatically, getting involved with RAG, community spirit etc.
I researched the hall a little bit and checked out websites too, just to see what they were into.
(ok, sounds obsessive but no way was i going to walk 40 minutes to 9am lectures lol)
do ppl actually put down that they enjoy computer games/movies/ or that they're a star-wars fan?

I don't think so. Ok maybe but perhaps I wouldn't. Or I would twist it around into something that would seem as if it is character building or something. But it is a somewhat informal statement so go for it if you want to.
Hello all

I have a forthcoming interview at Bristol for the English & Drama course and was wondering if any prospective or current students out there could advise what to expect in the interview? Before being asked for interview I had to write an essay on a poem they selected- is it possible they will quiz me on that? Personal statement? The schedule involves a drama workshop - can anyone relate to that?

Any help on this would be most appreciated
Many thanks
Alex
