Can you tell me where this online form is? Bristol accomodation office website just says they will be sending it out in May.

They're for overseas students...it's on the overseas student page for accomodation...the address came with my 'thanks for picking us as firm' letter.

I like the idea of the personal statement - think it's a good idea for sticking people with similar interests together and the likes

Yeah. It still says there'll be "general questions", which I assume will be about interests and anything else that will help them place you.

talespirit, does that mean you had a personal statement on the international application?

Pft, I do find it quite frustrating that they've clearly created the application process (because they've already sent links etc to international applicants) but they won't let me apply despite being shortly out of the country for 4 months.

Try calling them instead of emailing...calls are often taken more seriously.

And yes, the international student accomodation form is the same as the sample one on the webpage.

Think its cause they have to give international aps priority because at the end of the day - when you come home you'll have a base in the UK - wheras international applicants don't - and by the amount of international students bristol has - if they're sorting them out at the moment then they're probs v.busy.

If they still won't let you when you call - then fill in the questions from the template on a word doc and ask someone in your family to copy and paste them onto the application form when it opens.
Can anyboy tell me if there is a particular hall with a high concentration of international students? I think I am going to put Goldney as first choice, and the Hawthorns as second. Whilst I know a fair bit about Goldney, can anybody tell me anything about the Hawthorns? Cheers

Why does that matter?
Reply 1846
Because a lot of international students (obviously not all) aren't great at English and prefer to be around people who speak the same language/have similar interests. Without trying to generalise, they can be quite antisocial.

It's easily the best located accommodation right in the centre of the campus, not sure how uniforms the rooms are in size but some of them are meant to be absolutely huge. Your experience there shouldn't differ greatly from that at Goldney except for the obvious lack of grounds. Don't know a huge amount about the place though..

Statistically only 16% of the students are international (don't forget many will be post grad)...there can only be so many in a hall.....

Thanks for that, I think it will go down as a second choice.

So? That's over 1500 of the student population, or about 4-500 freshers.

say around 2000 in the 17,000 population of the whole uni...i'm sure there will be plenty of home students around for you to socialize with. Evenso, i doubt the accomodation wardens would put them all together...also Internationals are not from the same country and aside from US and Chinese population which is about 100-200....the rest are no more than 60 of a nationality at any one time in the 17,000 population....

Actually, at my school the Koreans/Japanese students prefer to hang out with the chinese even though they don't speak the same language.

It doesn't bother me, but to the person who it did bother, I would think they tend to pick en-suite accomadation (from what other university forums seem to say), so if you really don't want to be somewhere with a higher-than-normal proportion of international students don't pick en-suite.

As talespirit said, there will always be plenty of English students arround, and not all international students will ignore you!

I didnt say it bothered me, I was just asking. As you say, I have heard internationals stick together, which, for liguistic reasons and social differences is completely understandable. I have nothing what so ever against international students, alot of my friends are from overseas and I look forward to meeting many more at university (Im actually 1/4 Polish myself).
I didnt want to dingify the ''why does it matter'' response with a comment, but nobody would have questioned it had it been an international asking to be with other internationals.
Hi, I've read through this thread, the alt prospectus and the uni website and seriously having trouble with accomodation. I really want to live in a Hall, with an actual hall layout for social means, but the only self caterd hall seems to be manor, of which is expensive and is single sex:confused: corridors. I don't like the idea of living in flats such as in Uni Hall and the Student residences. Any reccomendations on a socialable self catered, cheapish hall would be much appreciated. Thanks x
I cannot find the alternative prospectus. Help me!

Only the corridoors are single sex because they share bathrooms! I don't think I would want toilet seats being left constantly up, or having boys spying on me in the shower lol..

I am sure it makes no difference, its not like you can't walk up a flight of stairs to go see the boys
I think the corridoors are set out boy, girl, boy, girl, so they are pretty mixed

It is cheaper than most self-catered though... because it is not ensuite (Durdham) or Goldney (which is probs expensive due to popularity).

The cheapest self-catered is University hall (me thinks), but it is in flats.

There are no other halls, because you don't like Goldney + University (flats) or Manor + Durdham (expensive).

So I don't know how to help you...

Is that the reasons they're single sex? Surely that can't be right. I mean, a lot of the halls offer shared bathrooms and I thought the majority of them had mixed corridors/flats. (Plus, I doubt you could have boys spying on you in the shower, assuming the showers have locks of some sort...although having said that, one of the unis I visited did just seem to offer a shower pretty much open to whoever walked in to the bathroom area...dear god, please say it's not like that?)

It is the reason...
But maybe some halls don't see it as an issue, or their showers are less revealing.

I think I remember someone saying they were like the ones at my school, where they are cubicles so the very top and bottom are not covered (like some toilet cubicles where you can see their feet or look over the top if you climbed up).
