Would it be a good idea to visit the halls on the Year 12 open day (though I am coming to Bristol in 2008). I never went my years one. Does anyone know if all the halls are open to look at etc.?

I'm not sure they get looked at on Open Days (they weren't on mine, although that was an English Open Day, because they're a bit scattered around and so not wholly convenient to slip into a tour). I think if you want to look at halls, you contact the halls themselves and arrange something.

heya all! i'm really sorry to be asking this question, since it's probably been asked already! I'm probably going to apply to goldney as my first choice (haven't decided on second choice yet) - but i'm starting to get worried about the social life! I'm a really sociable person and i'm really scared i'm going to end up in a dead hall, especially since i'm def going self catered! i've heard that stoke bishop has got a really good social scene, but i'm not sure if i could hack the walk every day (is it cyclable?) - even with people!

thats exactly how i feel

As far as I understand it, Goldney is a rather sociable hall, and certainly one of the most sociable of the self-catered halls.

OK what would you say is better for self catering (preferably en-suite): Goldney, Manor or University.

I was just reading the 2007 accom' prospectus. Goldney really does look nice, but at best you have a 50-50 chance right?

yeah but at the end of the day you might as well give it a shot right? If you were like 'bristol in 2007 was the second most difficult university to get into therefore i wont apply you wouldnt have got an offer. Same applies.

Oh btw goldney's ball is the most amazing thing ever (bastards!)

So I gather. Yeah I think Goldney will be my 1st, then one of the less popular halls as a 2nd.

Me too, though I'm still not sure at all what to put for 2nd. I'm tempted to just pick fairly randomly, but statistically there's a reasonably likely chance of ending up in your 2nd choice if you put down Goldney as your 1st, so it's quite important. Pft.

Is university hall alright? I know it's out in Stoke Bishop, but it looks like a decent hall.
I had a walk around Bristol the other day.
The walk to Goldney and CHH despite being shorter than the walk to Stoke Bishop felt like taking on a mountain. Is there like another path that students use or do they trek that one everyday?!

There are two main ways towards lectures, which did you take? One's a fair bit steeper than the other...

Quick question for anybody already at Bristol who has experienced the accommodation application process. Is it possible to ask to be housed in the same corridor/ share a room with somebody else applying from your same school?

I don't want to sound rude but I realise that we're going to meet loads of new people at university so I'm not worried about branching out, was just curious.

Thanks in advance!

I think you can probably try but I really advise against it. It's good that you're up for meeting new people, but if that's the case, why do you want to be with someone you already know? It may not work out well either, what if one or other of you starts feeling held back by the other? It might destroy a perfectly good friendship.

Why do you want so specifically to be with people you already know? I think that a large part of the excitement is meeting lots of new people and getting an entirely new friendship group. If your friend is going to be in Bristol anyway, especially if they're in the same hall, I expect you can see a lot of them anyway.
Lol...you should never walk up constitution hill! Only ever fall down it towards oceana (when times are desperate). You walk up the road wherecannons health club is (will be on your left when you walk up the road); still a small hill, but you just follow that road past a row of terraced houses, turn left then tada...goldney there you go.

Goldney ball is the most amazing thing ever- I worked on the committee last year and it was a truly wonderful evening
Oceana!? Pretty ****ing desperate indeed....

And goldney ball may be amazing but its far too expensive, Durdhambury's where it's at...
