I think they're more concerned with sharing bathrooms with the opposite sex....perhaps some girls are not comfortable with sharing showers (despite being in cubicles) with guys? [my brother's halls do that in ANU]

talespirit, is the accomodation thing on first come-first serve base? or they don't care when did you apply, just has to be before the deadline? just curious, i've applied recently
It's not first come first serve..
How can they have "applied recently"?

I thought we had to wait till may?

Lol. Makes no difference though, their applications still get processed at the same time.

OK. I've come to a bit of a wall. For my second choice, I'm either going to put University or the Hawthorns. And here's my problem.

I prefer the look of the Hawthorns. From what I can see on the website, the rooms look nice and for a student house it's quite large (c. 112 people) and so will surely still be reasonably sociable. So if I were to make the decision based purely on which one I like the look of, I would go for that one. HOWEVER, University is a hall, and people keep going on about the hall experience. What will I miss out on if I'm in a student house? I would have thought one of the main differences would be size, but with more than 100 people, I shouldn't have thought it would be too disastrously small to find people you like. Can anybody enlighten me? Because I keep almost deciding for definite and then changing my mind when I see how many people are horrified at the notion of student houses because halls basically make the first year.

EDIT: Oh wait, on the new accommodation prospectus I see that The Hawthorns are oversubscribed, which I hadn't seen before. Dammit! Ooook, I guess that makes my decision more straightforward...

well excuse me, overseas students have nowhere to live and they purely rely on accommodation from the uni unlike domestic students who have their homes in the UK
but yeah, the processing time is the same though

Wait...what? So I count as having somewhere to live despite living 3 hours away from Bristol? That's a hugely illogical argument. If you don't live a practical distance from the university to get there every day, you don't, whether that's the other side of the country or the other side of the world. Besides, I'm still guaranteed accommodation (along with many others), what with not living in the relevant postcodes and having an unconditional offer, but still don't get to apply early. Furthermore, there isn't just uni accommodation, if it got really desperate; there's also the private sector available for anybody who wants it. Plus, I don't think stolenstars was criticising overseas students anyway so there wasn't any need to get defensive.

Hi
I've been searching this thread for ages now, looking to see if anyone already living there has said anything about winkworth house because at the moment that's where I'm thinking of putting as my first choice but am struggling to find much on it. I've found a few bits on the union's site and there seem to be a couple of downsides such as less sociable than the halls and no tv reception (can't live without watching neighbours haha). The other one i'm considering is richmond terrace as would like en-suite but am worried if i put that first then winkworth as 2nd that i could end up not getting into either.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I seem to remember people talking about Winkworth somewhere in this thread, but then I have read a lot of this thread...maybe in the page 70s? Rough guess. Also, I think tv reception is less of an issue than it used to with online tv things like 4od and BBC iPlayer, but I don't know which channel Neighbours is on so I don't know if that helps...

I put richmond terrace as first, winkworth as second, and got into richmond terrace.
As for tv, if you have a computer you can watch tv on that (with a licence) using freewire tv. because it goes through resnet it doesn't use up any of your bandwidth.

I meant a girl who is living at winkworth house. She was bored.

thanks for the advice, think I'll put richmond then winkworth and hope for the best. I saw something about resnet on the union site but i wasn't sure if it was installed everywhere yet. also am i right in thinking both don't have bars. Am not a big drinker but like a few now and then. where do people go and doesn't that make it expensive going out in the city or do people tend to go to other halls bars anyway??
no student house has bars. richmond terrace is right next to the union (epi bar) and clifton sports bar (don't know about winkworth). there's also plenty of bars in clifton + whiteladies rd which are all nearby. Plus the city centre is only 15/20mins walk away.

Would you say Richmond is quite a social place?

Its between Richmond and Goldney for my first choice

Dunno

Think Ive got a decent chance of getting into goldney cause i can plonk loads of stuff on my statement thats quite good in terms of getting into halls "SU president, NYT, Peer Mentor, Lived in halls already, wants to get involved etc" plus I have like a mild disability so they may give me some credit and priority as it'd be tough for me tolive in SB

but im not sure whether goldneyis just a whim for me - and whether richmond would be more practical as a drama student ill be socialising with my course mostly anyways and ill be doing tons of hours per week so its not like ill be hanging round halls bored.

hmmm

and richmond has a garden too....i know goldney has grounds too... its just i got put off winkworth by the fact it doesnt seem like the nicest place in terms of places to chill - although its a short walk from the college green....is anyone in Richmond? fancy giving a mini review?

xx
