Is it illegal to play cards in school?

Recently my friend has been playing cards in the library every day, completely non-gambling games such as whist. The evil librarian came in earlier and shouted at him and told him that it was illegal to play cards apart from bridge. My question is is it actually illegal to play cards in school because it seems a bit ridiculous to me?

surely that would make playing snap or **** head an "illegal game" and the latter we used to play all the time. its not illegal to play card games in school as far as I know, though it would be illegal to gamble for money as in theory a license would be needed for that, thosgh how many people do you know that have help poker nights etc... so its something that she's probably making up to try get your friend to do work instead of playing cards..

No it's not illegal to just play cards. Haha what a moron, "illegal unless it's bridge." Next time ask him if you can have a whist drive, you'll bring the tonic and limes and he can bring the gin.

It's illegal to bet on non-skill games outside a licenced venue. I can't remember whether poker was classed as a skill game or not. There may also be a small bet loophole that allows players to bet for small change.

Since your friend wasn't betting there is absolutely no way it could be illegal to play cards in a library!

No he wasn't being noisy, we were in the sixth form reading room at the back of the library, I think she just hates him.

I think its fine as long as it isn't for money. The reason the librarian was annoyed was for playing non-education games in the library. I can't see any real reason why you can't.

Used to be funny at school...we'd be playing poker next to the chapel and the chaplain would walk in, get a bit of a 'tut tut' and then maybe join in!

People regularly play poker for cash in my college common room. Teachers know about it, but they don't do anything.
