I can't sleep because i keep coughing...

- Honey on it's own or with water doesn't help.
- Cough syrup doesn't help.

Any temporary solutions? :woo: :woo: :woo: :woo:

Gurgle (i'm not sure if this is the right medical term ) salt water

Are you taking cough syrup specifically made for tickly coughs? If you take any generic cough syrup or even worse one for chesty coughs, you're not going to get rid of the irritation in your air passages and lungs. Cough syrup should provide some relief but if you have a virus, it's not going to disappear like that.

I got a really nasty cough that's only started to disappear and which started back in December: I went for a jog wearing just shorts and a long-sleeve top at sub zero temperatures. A few days later, I had a nasty cold/cough. I even went on antibiotics 2 weeks later after getting fed up that the cough wasn't disappearing. That didn't even sort things out.

Whatever you do, don't do what I did: make sure you stay warm, don't hang out in the cold at all and get a lot of rest.

Ibuprofen... Gargle salt water... Drink plenty of fluids, cold water helps to soothe it temporarily... Drink coke, sprite, milk... Oh and the good old honey & lemon thing...

Sounds like you need some lubrication

Take some cough syrup and or strepsils etc...

They will soothe your throat out.

So you've been out a lot in the cold?
Benylin was the stuff I used at first, didn't help much at all.
Just drink loads and try a different brand. Covonia seemed to have a decent effect for me or Boots' own brand.
And make sure you're drinking loads of hot drinks.

Nope, not been in out in 2 weeks... snowed in the 1st 4 days, then the cold/flu kicked in... snowed in again from yesterday.

Got flask.

Co-codamol! It cures everything, and might supress the cough.

Ibuprofen's not a good choice, it's notorious for causing respiratory problems in some people. Also, the OP doesn't seem to need pain relief? And fizzy drinks are just likely to irritate the throat.

OP: Make sure the cough syrup you've got says "dry/tickly coughs" on the box/bottle. Keep drinking plenty of fluids to help lubricate the throat, and try sucking cough pastilles. Unfortunately these things do tend to get much worse at night, so if you're having trouble sleeping, try having a dose of Nytol or Night Nurse before bed.

Unfortunately I'm in a similar situation atm, have a terrible chesty cough that I've had since new year, and I just can't seem to shift. Hd my inhalers changed slightly, and I'm told if it's not gone by end of next week I need a chest X ray

It varies according to the practice, but it's generally within the region of £10-30.

I had this problem a couple of weeks ago, and left it, thinking it would go away, but it gradually got worse. Eventually I went to see my doctor who said it was a chest infection and gave me antibiotics (amoxicillin). It's cleared up completely now, so perhaps a visit to your GP is in order.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

Edit: I'm a fool for not reading the entire topic before posting, so you can pretty much ignore all my advice. I still hope you're feeling better soon, though.

I think i might have a chest infection? My cough sounds different anyway. Thanks.

I know it's shocking! My GP charges £15 for a letter to school, or £30 for a letter to work! Bloody cheeky.

It doesn't sound like you've got a chest infection tbh, if it's dry and tickly, and not chesty, and you're not coughing up sputum.
