ARGH! I hate all this complete bullsh*t about 'rahs'! It's a load of crap, just forget about it and stop having this conversation. Big wow, some people went to private schools and wear pashminas, but, just........ARGH!

Also, would like to point out that I am at Castle and went through state education my whole life.

Your comment would be worth much more if you hadn't bolted on the last sentence.

"Rah Girls"

More of them do turn up in University college, Hatfield and older bailey based colleges but they are a reflection of the university as a whole and can't be avoided. Not that you should go to university looking to avoid people either...

Of the lot, Grey had the fewest in my experience.

Deary me. SOME of us were working till 5.15 on Friday, and are still here writing lab reports and looking after open-day kiddies.
surely mary's has one of the largest numbers of rah girls due to the sheer fact that it currently is single-sex until october?!

Ha ha, it was pretty funny when charmingp kept insisting that they were NOT "one of them", then suddenly called us all "you lower classes". Sigh.

:puke:
Quick question: Is being rah more about clothes (ie. pashminas, flipped collared shirts), class (ie. born into "society"), attitude (ie. I am rich and exclusive and I only mingle with filthy rich people, and you wish you were me) or a combo of all of the above?

To be quite honest I am afraid of being labled rah since I went to a public school, and wear polos and pashminas, and have certain connections to society. But I don't want to be catagorised as a rah since those things don't matter to me, I care about people's characters not backgrounds or clothes

I think it might be a good point to make the distinction between a rah and the rest of the world

As far as i'm concerned some people go to public school. Some of them are nice normal people. Some of them are rahs
A rah is by her definition many of the things listed above. Designer clothes, Daddy's girl... all that malarchy. And there is a certain stereotype associated with that.
But just because a girl goes to public school DOESNT MEAN SHE IS A RAH
It's a bit like just because i go to state school doesn't mean I'm a chav  - far from it in fact

Please, please, please let's not start this discussion again....
It's sooo pointless!

Hey guys,

OK - couldn't be bothered to read everty single post on this topic becuase most people seem to have descended into some silly slag-off-athon, but just wanted to say to everyone who isn't yet at Durham - please, don't think that there's some massive Rah/Chav war going on, because that is simply nonsense. In my experience, the vast majority of people you will meet in Durham are polite, kind and generally nice regardless of where they were schooled and which college they're at. OK, Yes - you wil meet some absolute dicks, but you'd meet some of those wherever you went. (And, in my experience, the majority of dicks are those people who won't give you as chance because they think that you'll be snobbish and stuck-up just and are probably quite scared that you'll reject them first) I went to public school and think that pashs are jolly practical garments, but this does not make me a superficial snob with a superiority complex. Everyone at Durham has proved their worth merely to be there, and people who think that they are better than others because they're rich/working class, wear Ralph Lauren/some Chav brand just to prove a point are a little bit foolish.

OK - just felt the need to say that. Everyone with an offer for Durham - ACCEPT IT! You'll love the city and the university and have the best time of your life - I certainly do and am.

Aaaargh...stop it, stop it, stop it...there is absolutely no point discussing/arguing over this one...it's been done before. Just read the rest of the thread...
Yes, but I did post some exceptionally funny stuff earlier on, which I then got flamed massively for.

Class war is great!

I hate all rahs, they well annoy me!!! There are far too many in Durham, you can spot them a mile off with their pashminas and talking to Daddy on their phones.

 Durham would be so much better without rahs......at least I'm not at a Bailey College, they're all over them!

Lies....all lies....I'm not jealous of you bailey types in one bit. I think it's funny that you live so close to town....I save money because of the fact there are no shops on the hill (except college shops), and I get exercise whenever I have to go anywhere of any significance lol

The Hill rocks and you know it!! We've got the best views - regularly after a night out our group of friends would end up on Aidans Hill, such a gorgeous view, especially at 5am watching the sunrise  just so amazing!

 I think you'll find that you're the jealous one

Is the hill really that far away? I never got the chance to visit it on the open day.

No, there's just quite a clear line between the two areas....a kind of no-mans land consisting of Prebends bridge and that road that goes from the roundabout down near Prebends/bottom of the hill from Marys along to the New Inn.

And if you HAD visited the hill, you would have applied to a hill college
