The Student Room Group

I need to lose as much weight as possible in 5 weeks.

I'm going skiing in 5 weeks, and I don't think I can fit into my ski gear. Whoops.

It doesn't matter if I put the weight back on, as long as I can get my slopettes on at the beginning of the week (the skiing should stop me putting the weight back on instantly). I know losing weight fast isn't ideal, but I can't afford new ski gear and I don't want to have *that* conversation with my mother.

Loads of excercise isn't an option in the next couple of weeks - I'm going to be worked off my feet as it is and when I'm not working, I'm going to be very, very tired.

What is the best diet for losing weight without much help from exercise, and which keeps you energetic and alert? I don't want to shift weight but find I'm too tired to ski. I'm also awful about eating veggies so I'd idealy like to get vitamins and general greenery from fruit/peas/raw carrots. That's about all I eat in the veggy line. I also don't eat mushrooms, and that is non-negotiable. With meat/potatoes, I'll eat just about anything. I love fish and chicken.

Anyone fancy making me some meal plans? I need a prod as I'll probably just revert back to buying crisps from the campus vending machines for lunch if left to my own devices.

I'll try and be more sensible about weight loss in the future. Sucks to be on a deadline.

You're kind of asking the impossible.

You want to lose lots of weight.

You want to not excercise.

You want to remain alert and energetic.

You don't want healthy foods.

Would you like a crown to go with your fantasy world?

Seriously, if you want to lose weight, you're going to have to work at it. The more you work and the healthier you eat, the more you'll lose. The less you work, the more **** you eat, the less you'll lose. It's a payoff. This is what happens in the real world.

If I were doing it, I'd eat better and run... run lots.

Cambridge Diet or LighterLife - I've heard you lose a lot of weight but it is hard to keep off unless you change your eating habits permanently.

Well my suggestion would be three balanced meals and one snack every day, and if you can't do a lot of structured exercise just work at keeping active in the day; if you're going somewhere on foot, leave 5 mins later than usual and power walk it. Do 50 star jumps every time you have a spare 2 minutes, I don't know....yes, that's a silly example. Just stay moving as much as possible. Ok, what I'm saying sounds absurd to fitness fanatics, but if you're really wanting to keep your metabolism racing, make sure you give it a kick. Ideally, exercise should be involved, but I'm sympathetic with you because I'm a similar person, and I get the same sort of responses as you do on here...

As for food, I'd suggest a power lunch of an oily fish with beans or pulses of some kind (I mean things like kidney beans or pinto beans, not baked!), that always makes me feel really good in the afternoon.

But then I'm generally wrong around here, so...

A well thought out post, and perfectly acceptable. Even if you turned out to be wrong, you did 100% more than most...

You thought then posted, instead of the other way round.

Probably Atkins Induction Diet, which is basically meat, vegetables, olive oil, cheese.. anything without too many carbohydrates.

You have to keep below 20g of carbs each day. You'd lose around 20lbs on that in two weeks.

Then keep going on the OWL diet (ongoing weight loss) diet and you could lose a further 10-15lbs.

Hmmm...well you say you aqre going to be rushed off your feet so I guess you are working a lot??

I'd start with a bowl of porridge or wheaty cereal in the morning. Snack on fruit like bananas, clementines, melon...
Lunchtime have either a stirfry with lean meat such as chicken or turkey, or you could have a salad with fish or again another lean meat.
Dinner, eat before 7 if you can because after that the digestive process slows down making it harder to burn off what you eat. You could have some rice with something? Or have meat with potatoes, spaghetti bolognese?

Alternatively, swap around your lunchtime and dinner options - try to reduce the carbs you eat as the day goes along -i.e eat more carbs for breakfast, than fewer carbs for lunch, then fewer carbs for dinner.

look all these diets are ********...

the best way to lose weight is to stop eating **** e.g. chocolates, crisps etc.

and if you want to lose the weight quicker, run a little bit.

the best way to lose inches quick to get into your ski stuff, is probably what ExNihilo said when he said about ketosis, basically your body will be somewhat (more like totally) starved of carbs, which means you drop a LOT of water weight. heres an article on ketosis http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Ketosis/Pages/Definition.aspx?url=Pages/What-is-it.aspx

But these diets are best kept till 14 days before your holiday, so, what to do in the meantime?
Follow these rules and you will have a successful diet and continued weight loss

(the rules are at the bottom)

Cut the amount of calories you're eating significantly.

I never said I wanted to be able to eat unhealthy stuff, I just said that I didn't like certain veggies (but I did list some I liked) and probably wouldn't eat them. What is wrong with fruit? I never said "I want to lose weight on a diet of burgers and chips"

I know. I said this wasn't ideal, and this isn't a long term strategy. I just need to fit into a pair of trousers. A quick fix, even if it isn't a longterm one.

The reason I can't exercise much at the moment is because I am on my feet most of the day anyway and I have a hell of a lot to do. We're doing a MASSIVE campaign and am so tired when I get home that I just want to sleep. I don't have time to go for two runs a day - I'm only getting 5 hours of sleep a night as it is.

Just do what I told you and you'll be grand. You'll lose around 10lbs in the first 4 days or so (which will include a lot of water weight = less bloat)

For someone who isn't overweight to begin with a loss of 10lbs is extremely unlikely, even with a loss of 'water weight' as you call it, she still won't see a loss of 10lbs in the first 4 days at all.

say bye to crisps and chocolate and go for short runs. no pain no gain.

Yes she will. You don't know anything about water retention or nutrition so I just won't even bother with this post.

HIIT training is good and quick but pretty tough - its like a continuous jog/sprint cycle - http://musclemedia.com/training/hiit.asp

whenever you feel like you're not doing something important, get out there, run do some exercise

Also, cut down alot on the carbs and calories - no liquid calories like juice or coke - cut out the snacks etc. And remember fruits are healthy but some have a lot of calories.

Finally the biggest thing is to remain consistent. It's up to you in the end how you spend your time, and if you dont make the right decision, then youre the one who'll be all embarassed on that day.

btw have you tried returning the trousers? you could get an exchange - just say they're too small or something to your mom. shouldnt be too bad.

good luck - tell us what happens

Amen to this.

Eat less *****, do more exercise. It's not rocket science.
