Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen

I haven't been able to find a forum dedicated only for the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, so I decided to make one.
Basically, I was after any information about what the university is like, as the prospectus wasn't very helpful.
They gave me an offer for Pharmacy of BBB which is why it is my insurance choice, not that I am very keen to go there.
So this is for anyone who has been there, or is there or is hoping to go there, any information about the university is helpful!

Im in 2nd year pharmacy at the moment, enjoying it despite it being tough.

What other courses have you applied for? If you're looking to go into pharmacy in industry then strathclyde is the better choice as far as I've heard, but RGU do a lot more to train students for community and hospital pharmacy.

Specific questions about the uni? Dont look down on the uni just because it's got lower entry requirements - most put that down to the fact that Aberdeen's so far north that the requirements are lower to encourage people. RGU has a very high graduate employment rate, and a pharmacy degree from here is well-respected. I'd seriously consider it, if moving up here is an option

Yay-finally someone I can talk to about the university AND the course I'm doing!
Ive applied for Pharmacy courses at Robert Gordon, Strathclyde, Manchester, Nottingham and Bath.
I know Manchester is my firm, with an offer of ABB, and because all my other offers are higher than that then the only offer I can put as my insurance is RGU as they gave me BBB.
I'm not as interested in industrial as I am in Hospital.
The only reason I wasn't so keen on it was because of the lack of information I can get on the university from the website and the prospectus. The prospectus showed 1 picture of the university and I couldn't tell much about it apart from it looked modern.
Is it good? It sounds like a good course. Generally what's it like, is it good socially? is it righ in the city centre?
(sorry but I have a lot of questions)
No problem, ask away.

Accomodation: if you're living in Aberdeen Woolmanhill is the student accomodation you'll most likely go to. It has a really good atmosphere and they have people on to make sure you dont get disturbed every single night without bringing the atmosphere down entirely.

Social life: There are a good few clubs in Aberdeen, none of them fantastic but if you get in a good crowd you'll enjoy yourself wherever you go. Its a cheap night out because most places have student nights on throughout the week and also accomodation is literally at most 10mins away from union street where the majority of the clubs are so there's no need for taxis in and out of the city centre.

Uni folk: if your year is anything like ours, there'll be about 120 of you and a lot of them will be Irish, a few english and some scots as well as some international students. Pharmacy parties are held for pretty much anything, including end of exam nights out, and usually everyone from your year will migrate together and its generally an amazing night out. Our year is pretty sociable, though my friend group has changed slightly, but I speak to about 50% of the people on the course at some time or another. The Irish students are mainly post-grads in that they've done a degree over there and are on their second one with the mPharm. Its sometimes a bit daunting cos they spout all this knowledge but the majority of the time its actually really helpful because they tend to understand and dont mind explaining or taking time to help. Pharmacy students as a whole seem to be friendly and open

1st year pharmacy we did mostly general stuff, such as base chemistry biology and physics, and a physiology module in 2nd semester, which was actually a second year module - due to the fact that the degree up here used to be 5 years long instead of 4, before the english and scottish systems merged and we had to compromise  It wasnt too bad a year, though physiology was difficult enough.

This year (2nd) I had an Industry module, Molecular pharmacy, Clinical pharmacy and therapeutics, and pharmacy law and practice. Got Dosage form design, Biochemistry, Microbiology and continued Clinical pharmacy and therapeutics this semester. I wont lie, its a lot of work, but its extremely interesting at the moment, learning drug therapies and getting to the stage where we're counselling patients who come in with things like wanting to halve their dose of anti-diuretic to prevent their ankles swelling as much. Its scary but exciting at the same time. Very demanding but worth it

Any other questions?

Wow-I can't wait!
I just wanted to make sure I was making the right choice with putting this as my insurance. I am going to the applicant day in March which will hopefully be even more helpful.
I am slightly worried about how difficult it is going to be-so thankyou for being honest with me. Do you mind me asking you what subjects you took at A-level and what grades you got? I am taking Biology Chemistry and French. Most people give me a funny look when I say French but at the time I had no idea what I wanted to do. My AS results were AAA and I'm predicted the same at A level, although I doubt I will get that.
The people you have described seem really friendly so hopefully it will be the same for me.
I have a couple more questions...where are the majority of lectures held for Pharmacy? Is it mainly in one building or do you have to travel around to different parts of the city? I am being sent an accommodation booklet and want to pick somewhere that means I won't have to travel far for lectures.

And aside from the people and the actual course structure, what is the university like? Do you like it?

Thanks again for this
All lectures are held at St Andrews street, which is about a 2 minute walk from Woolmanhill halls. Labs and coursework sessions are in Schoolhill, which is maybe a 5-10 minute walk. There is a campus out at Garthdee which you need to get a bus to but you only need to go there in May for exams.

I really quite like the uni itself actually - the Schoolhill building is for pharmacy students only which is pretty nice, as far as Im aware no other courses at RGU have that, makes it kinda special  The buildings are nice enough inside and the labs for formulation and things are all pretty niew and up-to-date

It seems to most students going to RGU are pharmacy students?

I am going to go to see the city and the Uni by flight at 25th and 26th this month. I am still considering RGU's offer cos I am going to study a postgraduate... Is it very cold in Aberdeen now?
