Hi--does anyone know what type of questions I should be expecting on the specific subject test at cambridge (for law)?
...and is it true that they interview the majority of applicants. I' m not even getting interviewed cause I'm overseas (and being interviewed is my strong point). I'm writing the tests supervised and one of my teachers has to send them back to cam. Ugggh--this is trecherous!

Lol- well if you find out let me know! I'm also doing Law too and I think the test must be general knowledge because they don't require any previous knowledge about Law for the course.

Oh by the way Canada Girl, I was born in Calgary

I'm curious though as to why you've applied to the UK, because not too many Canadians apply overseas, and almost all that do go to the US.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the advice. I will contact the admin tutor. Why I am applying to Cam? Well, it's Cambridge! But seriously, I am also applying to Canadian Law schools and some American schools.
Interesting you have an interview--I don't even have one. They are only assessing me on my papers and my tests.

I go home on the 6th or I'd have offered you a coffee - sorry!
I have an interview at Jesus college for Economics on the 17th and 18th. Anyone else applying to read Economics. What steps are you taking to preparefor your interview.

Sound advice. My problem is a bit different, as I know when my interview will be as my school careers teacher phoned on my behalf to ask (although I haven't actually received written confirmation of this). The real problem is that I still haven't received any request for written work, or a cover sheet which needs to be signed by my teachers before the work can be sent off, so I'm kinda in limbo. As a matter of interest, which college/year/subject are you studying, Haz?

Don't worry, apparently they're really behind because of the increased number of applications this year. I'm sure they'll get their act together - if not, call, nothing to lose. I'm studying Archaeology and Anthropology at Newnham - 1st term here but it has been amazing so far!

Do we really have to prepare? I don't want to! I would only do any sort of prep for the test maybe, but as far as interview goes I want to turn up simply as I am. Making sure I don't come out with textbook answers and allowing my person to come through. A policy which served me well at Queen Mary and Manchester, but for the formal interview at Cambridge should I just go as I am or practise?

WOW -Arch and Anth -what is it like -I am applying this year for Peterhouse. What is your favourite part of the course? I am sooo going to have a problem with showing what I have done to prove my interest in my subject extra-curricularly -I mean I haven't gone on any digs or anything.

It's always better to "prepare" for a university interview, but it depends on what you mean by "prepare". Like you said, you don't exactly want to walk into your interview and regurgitate memorised answers. But you do want to read around your subject because interviewers might ask you things like "which recent advancement in [your subject here] impresses you the most" or "what are you views on the controversial issue of _____".
Well I've got my date... Dec 11th for SPS at Lucy Cavendish... starting at _9:30 am_!

I've got TWO tests, one general, one subject specific... each an hour and a half long!

Then a free lunch (w00t, w00t)

and then two interviews, each with 2 interviewers.

It's a bit mad, but I think that the intensity of the day will actually help me to be less nervous!

My hubby went through all of this when he applied (and was accepted) as a NatSci last year at Trinity. Good luck everyone!

Well the good news is the course is fantastic! We have all the leading people lecturing and supervising too. My favourite part is social anthropology but paleolithic art is fascinating as well... I love all of it except for genetics but I will get to drop that at the end of the year! Bad news is, it's an awful lot of work. We have more essays than most as sciences have practicals and arts are a bit more lenient... Ok once you learn to churn them out quickly.

Don't worry about not having been on any digs, neither had I. It would be good to know about a site or 2 in detail though. Just show that you're interested - they know not everyone has had the opportunity to go on a dig. Most importantly, relax!

And in answer to an earlier point, prepare to the extent that you can draw on examples to back up your arguments but don't stress. As said, you should let your own opinions come through and that needs very little preparation. Good luck!

Hey again

Thanks for your reply. I too have a feeling that social anth will be the best part of the course -if I get to study it of course! I have a bad feeling they have crossed me off their lists already as I only have one 30 min interview whereas everyone else has several. Oh well it is worth a try I guess. By the way, what college are you at? Is there any stigma attached to Peterhouse because I told my history teacher I was applying and she was quite negative about the college and told me to apply to St Catherine's where her daughters were.

There is the long-standing "joke" that they're all gay, and being rather small, it can be a bit isolating I guess. But I know the Peterhouse medics pretty well, and they all seem perfectly happy there, and are fairly normal sort of people... If you like the look of it, go with your gut feeling. Catz is good too though, of course.

What kind of reputation does emmanuel have? I heard it was friendly and has a good student bar and so that's why I applied.
Reply 176
Its bar is supposedly very good, and yes, it's meant to be very friendly. Kind of like Clare really - I don't really know anyone from there apart from random acquaintances from early on in the term etc, so I don't know. My friends have been to formal there and said it was really nice.

Hi Sienna,
lol! Don't listen to your teacher - most of the colleges have bad reps amongst rival colleges, that's just the way it is. Peterhouse is the incestuous college, Newnham (My college) is full of sluts, Pembroke people are geeks, Christs is the suicide college, Trinity is stuck up.... the list gos on! Don't believe a word - at the end of the day there are decent people and teachers in every college and even if (and this is rare) you don't like it, you can just socialise with people from other colleges. People afilliated to one college always bitch about the other colleges - Johns and Trinity are the worst for that.

Anyway, Peterhouse is really pretty and it's the oldest college which makes it quite atmospheric! Don't go to interview thinking they've already decided against you - just give it your best shot and you may well be surprised. Good luck!
I haven't ever heard of anyone committing suicide as a result of being at Christ's. People here usually have the last laugh when it comes to degree results.

If you are clever enough to get into what is probably the most academic college in Cambridge, I more or less guarantee that you will leave with nothing worse than a 2:2. Hardly anyone here gets a third (apart from the ODD SLACKER).
