Does Oxford or Cambridge do visits to ordinary city comprehensives to spread the word? If so, How do they happen?

I think you can contact them if you want them to come to your school. Don't know if they visit comprehensives but they didn't visit mine..

Yes. Both the target schools scheme which is run by OUSU and the Access Scheme which is run by the admissions department, send students out to comprehensives, mainly in inner city areas, to give informal tlks and question and answer sessions. I'm not sure about Cambridge but i assume they have similar schemes operating too. Go to http://www.oxford-access.org or http://www.targetschools.com

Oxford (Baliol) visited my old school on one of those 'oh yes, we really want you poor people in our university' talks. I was invited to attend, along with other high achievers and we were split into our subject groups for a seminar (mine was English.)
I already knew that I probably wouldn't apply to Oxford, and this reaffirmed my decision. The English lecturer was a fire-breathing dragon of a woman and the students who were brought along as 'representatives' for English were arrogant so-and-sos and were really sycophantic towards their tutor! We sat with my English teacher at dinner and she detested this woman too.
Apparantly the other subjects were less intolerable, but this really wasn't a good PR project for Oxford (unless they wanted to put us off!)
