durham isn't that bad is it????? :@

well the thing is i quite like durham. i applied for L100 at manchester (BBB), york (AAB), durham (AAB) and cam. GNL0 (morse and score(AAB, A/B in FMaths) at warwick and ucl respectively.

got rejectd from warwick and cam.

we were discussing unis today and i said that i won't accpt ucl cos they want a/b in Fmaths and i dnt have confidence to get that.

then they talked as if i was doomed! ur gonna HAVE to go to durham now...making it sound as if it was really bad! i know it's not but they're not convinced. i mean it's a really reputable uni....isn't it?????????// im sure it is!!!!!

need some evidence to back up that durham is a good uni and ppl will throw themselves at the chance to get a place!!!!!! iv looked on the like times and gaurdian websites but they really aren't much use.

what do you think? do you think my parents are fair to say that? i don't think they are to say that!!!! honestly they sounded as if i now have to make the best of what iv got.....but i thnk that holding a conditional from durham is quite good?

omg im stressed and confused. please help people.

It's a fantastic place and a great univeristy.

I hate people who get all hung up on the reputation of everywhere. It's all arses. This place rules.

Durham's def one of the best unis in the country, plus its third oldest in england, which somehow gives it a good reputation i guess... ITS JUST GOOD! IT IS! rar x

Durham is a great place to go. It's true that alot of the people who come here tried and failed for oxbridge (proud to say im not one of them!!lol) but that's not such a bad thing. Not everyone can get into oxbridge so we get just as good students here hence our v good rep.

Elucidate, please.

Personally I think it's a very good place to have an offer from. It's a great university, and hard to get into, so you should be proud  .
And reputation doesn't necessarily count.

yeah well........try telling my parents that it's a great uni!!!!!!!!

well the reputation bit doesn't really count, but if i love both unis then that'll probably be the deciding factor it will come down to won't it?

Tell your parents its your choice and what do they know? It IS a great uni any fool knows that, loads of people would kill for the chance to go there, and who cares about the reputation?! It's not about that, it's about what you can show you have learnt/how you have grown.

I went to comprehensives, did mickey mouse A levels (psychology, business studies, RE) and I still got onto a Law and Business degree at Warwick (about 30 applicants a place).
I then quit warwick after a year, but still got 6 unconditional offers from wicked unis...because I was able to show what I had learnt and how I had grown, go where you want to go, dont get hung up on reputation (durham has a fantastic reputation anyway). According to these latest world league tables, which many commentators are claiming to be a lot more accurate/representative than the ones we currently use, uni of sussex is meant to be one of the best universities in the world...just go where u wana go.

This reminds me of something that pissed me off the other day, my sisters friend wants to drama for GCSE, and her mum wont let her because "universities dont care about drama gcse, you're better at academic things, the people who do drama gcse are the people who cant cope with proper subjects". I've never heard such a massive load of crap in my life...stupid old people talking about things they dont know about.

Durham has often been known as the "Oxbridge of the North" if that helps you.

And yes, it is full of people like me, who applied to Cam, and got rejected, so went to Durham. As such, it is full of people who all get 4 A's at A-Level and are very intelligent.

It has a great reputation with employers too. I am doing your course now "Economics - L100" and Durham Business School recently won some big award putting it on the prominent pages of the Guardian.

The economics dept. and durham uni have strong links with big employers like Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC) and Deloitte, which can guarantee you a job at the end of Uni.

Gabby Yorath/Logan went there.

Phhhwwwwwoooooooaaaaaarrrrrrr

(she got a 2:1 in Law for anyone who's interested)

Elaborate, please. (I don't think Oxbridge could give a flying f*ck how "you have grown", whatever the hell that means).

It's academically very good but socially in terms of student make-up a bit in the dark ages (and I do know). It's a town overrun by students. Durham is quite niche and contained but don't lose sight of the fact it is a small town with limited social possibilities. Some people do love it there though. But be sure you don't pick a place just for it's reputation academically.

To be honest, you're gonna meet a much bigger range of people in a "town-based Uni" rather than a campus based one, where you dont tend to leave it.

there are so many threads with everyone who goes to durham giving their impressions on its best and worst aspects. read them, but most importantly go with your gut instinct

Ok, so Durham isn't very racially diverse, but compared to where I live (Cumbria) it is!!!

I dunno about that...Durham is quite racially diverse I'd say....I mean, its no London, but still

Yeah, I come home to Birmingham and marvel at the fact that non-white people still exist... But there are still students from all over the world. I mean, don't forget Teikyo!
