Anyone looking forward to uni without an emphasis on partying and alcohol?

I'm getting a bit worried and disheartened as most people at my 6th form and who i already know at uni seem to be looking forward to partying every night and getting drunk. I generally don't drink (i'm not against it-i'd have a glass of wine with a meal etc) however i see no point in drinking to get ill or be sociable-i see it as a bit of a waste of money when people go over the top. I've also never been to a night club, it just doesn't appeal to me. So is there anyone at uni or going to uni who manages to be sociable and have a good time without the drink. I'm seriously looking forward to study, but i'm also looking forward to joining societies or getting involved in music or drama or going to see the odd show. It's not that i don't want a social life-i just want a different one to the majority of people i know.

You should try going to a nightclub a few times before judging it. Dancing for hours with some of your best mates can be brilliant.

There are obviously loads of different ways of enjoying yourself without alcohol, and you'll certainly be able to do it through societies or whatever whilst you're there.

Most people at least dabble in socialising with, and socialising without alcohol.

I would but it just doesn't appeal to me at all-i suppose i prefer a 'natural' adrenaline which i could get through performing with people or visiting the theatre-even going for a meal etc.

It didn't appeal to me either, before I did it. And dancing with your mates can be a right natural high. You don't have to be drunk to dance.

clubs didnt appeal to me at all ( i was one of these righteous tossers who sneered at anyone who'd ever been to one) but when i got dragged out for my 18th i discovered how much fun they can be and quite often i'll go clubbing and not even drink..the dancing with mates is what it's all about
OP I feel quite similarly to you on the nightclub front.

I've never been to one because my basement is basically a bar, so my friends and I generally hang out down there (especially since none of us were 18 up until my birthday on Wednesday) and I enjoy dancing and having a good time, but nightclub's in general don't appeal to me.
I think for me I just need to find the right club with the right music but I'm not looking to be going out every night and I certainly am not looking forward to university purely for the drinking aspect.

Going to see a show or have a meal sounds much more like my kind of evening
So yes - I'm looking forward to univeristy without an emphasis on partying and alcohol.
No, I want the clubbing/alcohol/partying thanks.

To be honest, after the first term, most people settle down quite a bit and go out less. I've found that once the first few months were over, and you found your friends etc. then you will go out clubbing less, and will have more nights in, watching movies or just chatting. (money comes into it too lol)
Don't knock the clubs though, dancing with your mates to some good cheesy music, with or without alcohol, is soo much fun

I don't drink - like you, I'm not against it, but it's never appealed. I don't generally go clubbing, but I've found that at friends' birthday parties and things that dancing like an idiot to music I normally wouldn't be caught dead listening to can be surprisingly fun. I've often been asked how I can do it without a drink in my hand!

Having said that, that's not why I'm looking forward to going to uni. I'm going mainly to work, and I know most of the places I've applied to have a good theatrical scene and attract decent comedians, so my social life will hopefully revolve around that area more than the clubs. I'm dreading how my more teetotal attitude will be taken though, if I'm honest.

I've never been clubbing, but I do drink. However, I'm not looking forward to uni solely for the drinking, it's more for the independence. My mum's always been very strict about me going out, so I'm looking forward to having the opportunity to go out. Even just going to a bar for one or two drinks with a couple of friends, not necessarily clubbing until the wee small hours of the morning, completely off my face, and not remembering it the next morning.

You don't need to be off your head to have a good time! (although it does make it more amusing) hehe.
Go out clubbing with your friends one night, get ready with your friends, put loud music on! and have FUN

You're not the only one, don't worry, I completely agree with you.

I'm going to university to studay, being able to go out and have fun is simply a bonus.
Don't be so ignorant as to assume that people who drink don't socialise or go out without alcohol.
I didn't really have that much urge to go out to clubs, the music that most play are far from what I'd normally listen to, but I've found since being at uni, I've really gotten into the whole clubbing thing, I love it!

I don't usually go out midweek, I've got far too many 9am starts for that, but I enjoy going out once in a while, definitely give it at least one try, just to see!

i don't know what to expect at cambridge... the dancing does sound like me though-if i'm in the right mood i can have a great time dancing without alcohol! The best thing is if those around you are drunk they won't remember you doing it, but you'll remember the great time you had!

I'm not a fan of clubbing... but I'm sure it won't matter... its always easy to have fun as long as you have good friends
I love going to clubs however, only those that have interesting music or on nights offering house/techno music. I enjoy the occasional crazy night out. However, I am not looking forward to uni as it involves binge drinking and lots of sex. I am looking forward to meeting people with same interests as me and sharing various ideas regarding politics, history, science and economics. I love debate and discussion. I am also looking forward to lectures and research however , everything has their limits and I just cant wait until i get to experience the British nightlife.

Yeah, I know what you mean - my grandma keeps throwing articles from the Telegraph at me, all of which somehow make out that within my first week of getting there I'll end up paralytic, tied up and naked in a punt, having swallowed a goldfish or two! It'll depend on the group of friends you end up with, I think, as to how alcohol-fuelled the weekends will be.

Expect going out to be immense for a term or two and then it fizzles out. That lull tends to coincide with detesting every second of your degree due to being mind ****** on a regular basis. Get ready to work.
